Call of the Dark Lord by FireWind

As a result of precession over some 2100 years, the signs no longer coincide with the constellations. The Moon and planets are always located in the zodiac and hence near the ecliptic. The purpose of this page is to offer all the necessary resources and information to manually calculate and configure an astrological chart.

Astrology is a means of divination based upon the location of the zodiac and planets at the time and location of a person's birth. Since astrology is not an exact science, knowledge of astronomy and mathematics is crucial to plotting a natal chart or any other. As a matter of fact, astrology does not come into play until after the chart is plotted. Everything up to that point is the SCIENCE OF ASTRONOMY!

After the chart is plotted, then divinatory interpretations are applied to various aspects of a person's life according to the placement of the zodiac in the houses and the influence of the planets, etc.  These interpretations are the product of man's imagination, as is everything else associated with ANY religious system. No one is arguing the idea of divine inspiration for such imagination. (It all had to have come from somewhere, but no one can prove or disprove it's exact source.  Therefore, I am agnostic.)

The exact origin of astrology as we know it is not definitive. We do know that the system is cross-cultural and that it surfaced around the same time period within each practicing culture. In other words, the majority of the world's ancient cultures had devised some astrological system and were utilizing this system relatively at the same time.

Astrology as a science, now known as ASTRONOMY, came into use during the same time that Paganism became an organized religion. Temples were erected in honor of specific deities and designated priests began practicing ceremonial magic which was heavily founded on science and mathematics. Governments were also established during this time, and it was the duty of these priests to provide their government with accurate calendars so that government leaders would know when to designate public planting and harvest festivals which also focused on a specific deity. An entire civilization had to work in unison to ensure there would be enough food to sustain them throughout the year. And, appeasing the gods in exchange for a good growing season and abundant harvest couldn't hurt. There was no separation of church and state; both functioned side by side.

Also crucial to sustainable agriculture was weather prediction, brought to you by astronomy/astrology. The scientific and mathematical discoveries of this time period are still in use today although they were improved and expanded upon during the Renaissance. We still rely on weather predictions and agricultural sustenance for our survival. In fact, there is not a farmer worth his/her grain who does not have a copy of the Farmer's Almanac which is based entirely on ASTROLOGY.

The following essay is an example of how the academic and scientific communities feel about astrology as a "science."

Astronomy vs. Astrology

Constellations exist only in the minds of human beings. They are projected onto random groups of stars to create a picture story. These pictures have appeared in the sky every year at the same time for thousands of years.

From very early in recorded history, the stars were important to people in their daily lives. The stars assisted the ancients in planning for the planting of their crops, guiding navigators on their many adventures, and as a way of telling time. Much wonder and mystery was associated with the stars, and the people of ancient times began to place a grander, often divine, meaning on the majestic heavenly bodies.

Astronomy is the mother of science and mathematics. In the beginning, Astrology and Astronomy were sister sciences, and developed side by side for Millennia. At first, astrology was the more important of the two. However, in modern times, the science of astronomy has shown conclusively that astrology, while based on sound astronomical principles, is useless when it comes to analyzing personalities and predicting the future. Nevertheless, many people today still choose to believe in astrology, and there is big business in casting horoscopes. According to astrology, the period of the year which each sign of the zodiac it is determined by the time in which the Sun is "in" its corresponding constellation. For that reason, it is not actually possible to observe a zodiacal constellation in the night sky during the time its sign is nt. Instead, look for your constellation in the exact opposite time of the year. For example, Sagittarius is designated as from November 22 to December 21. However, if you want to observe Sagittarius, you will have to wait until Summer to see it. Instead, spend your observing time viewing Taurus.

It is a shame that many people cannot distinguish the words Astronomy and Astrology as used in the English language. From a merely logical point of view, the name of the science which studies the material universe beyond the earth's atmosphere should be named astrology, and thus be consistent with such words as biology, ecology, and the names of other sciences. However, language is not science, and is often not logical. The correct term is astronomy, and we should all strive to make a distinction between astronomy and astrology in general conversation.

When misunderstandings about word usage come up, the best course of action is to check the dictionary and look up the etymology or history of the words in question. According to Webster's Unabridged Dictionary, astronomy was a word that was first used in the Middle ages. The definition is: "the study of the material universe beyond the earth's atmosphere."

The root components of this word are ASTRO- and -NOMY, both Greek roots. Astro- means "stars" and -nomy means "measurement", "distribution" or "arrangement." This root word can also be found in such words as Economy. Thus Astronomy is the arrangement of the stars.

The word Astrology, on the other hand, combines the Astro- root with -OLOGY, a Greek word which means "knowledge" or "science". Thus Astrology means Knowledge from the Stars. The dictionary definition of Astrology is "the study of the stars in an attempt to determine their influence on human affairs." This word in English also dates from the middle ages, and was also once an alternative for astronomy. Of course, in our time, Astronomy is a science and Astrology is fortune telling. Flaspoehler makes one point here that I have to argue. The word, "ology" means "the process of studying" something. Thus, the meaning of the word, "astrology" would be, "the process of studying the stars, the process of studying science, or the process of studying knowledge." Could it be that according to this definition that astrology may be a legitimate school of thought? I see no reason why it could not be legitimate because in order to refute astrology as a science, one must also refute astronomy and no scientist is willing to do this.--Administrator

Astro Map (View full size image; opens in a pop up window)

This Astromap shows where in the world the influence of your natal planets is strongest, where your places of personal power lie, how you relate to countries and cities, and how you relate to people from other parts of the Earth.  It is a well-known astrological fact, that those planets near the axes of a natal chart, i.e. placed near the horizon or the meridian, are particularly significant. The axes or cardinal points in a chart are: AC = the Ascendant, or rising sign;  DC = the Descendant, or descending sign;  MC = Medium Coeli, the Mid-heaven or highest point; IC = Imum Coeli, the lowest point in the heavens.  Not everyone has one or more planets placed at these cardinal points in the birth chart. Only those born at sunrise will have the Sun conjunct the Ascendant, similarly, those born at the time of a "setting" Moon will have their Moon in the same place as their Descendant, and so on.

Before you can plot your natal chart, there are some essential items you will need. The first item is a world map denoting the approximate longitude and latitude of your place of birth. Secondly, you will need a time zone map denoting local time zones. This is essential for converting local time to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), also referred to as Universal Time (UT). Greenwich Mean Time is then converted to Sidereal Time or Star Time. In the Ephemerides, "The Sidereal Time given daily for noon UT is the angle between the Greenwich Meridian and the Vernal Point, measured in hours westward from Greenwich on the celestial equator."

Now,  you need a basic scientific calculator that will handle the formula functions.  I have provided this one for you.  (Yes, it actually works; try it!)

Once you know the correct Sidereal Time, you can then determine the location of the constellations at your time and place of birth.  You will need the Ephemeris charts to do this.

Below are the maps you will need to aid you in your calculations. All of the images on this page open in pop up windows.

Now it is time to plot your chart.  For that, you will need a compass, protractor, and ruler.  I prefer a drafter's protractor for this because the degrees are in the middle, as opposed to the outside and is therefore more accurate.  A thin transparent ruler is also preferable for accuracy.  Pens with different colored ink also help to keep things organized, but they are not necessary.  Each house is colored by the Zodiac Sign located on the cusp of the house; that is the reason for all the different colors on a chart.  You’ll notice that this page is color-coordinated also.  When you're finished, your natal chart, should look something like this:

Sample Natal Chart (View full size image; opens in a pop up window)

Once your chart is plotted, you need to write the interpretation according to the associations of the constellations and planets in relation to their placement in the different houses on the chart.  Think of a tarot reading.  The meaning of each card is generalized and could apply to anyone.  What determines the meaning of a card is its position in the spread.  Likewise, the sign and planetary meanings are also generalized.  The house association determines how you interpret each sign or planet in the house.  Each house may also be dominated by a planetary influence.

Getting Started

"An astrological chart describes inner substance. It's the stuff you're made of, the basic matter that forms the psyche. It is certainly what has been written, but it's unformed when you are born. It exists in potential. It hasn't been lived yet. And sooner or later it will seek to actualize itself." Dr. Liz Greene Ph.D., Astrologer and Jungian Analyst

"We are born at a given moment in a given place and like vintage years of wine we have the qualities of the year and of the season in which we are born. Astrology does not lay claim to anything else." Dr. C. G. Jung MD, the original Jungian Analyst

Sun Sign Astrology

Almost everyone knows what their "astrological Sun sign" is from reading the daily horoscopes in the newspaper. Sun Sign Astrology is just the tip of a huge iceberg. What most folks don't realize is that at the moment of a person's birth, each of the planets in our solar system has a correlation with regard to the human personality depending on:

  • What Zodiac Sign the planet is in
  • How the different planets "aspect" or "connect" with each other
  • And what house the planet is in.

There are four major concepts in astrology:

I - Planets

- raw energy (these are the Verbs of Astrology)

II - Zodiac Signs

- patterns of energy (these are the Adverbs of Astrology)

III - Aspects

- these are different connections between the planets

IV - Houses

- where the energy/patterns (planets/signs) take place

Astrologers attempt the difficult task of cohesively pulling together and synthesizing the ways that the planets, signs, aspects, and houses in a person's birth chart all work together to form a whole. We look for major repeated themes in the birth chart. And we look for a thousand other "things" that are more subtle like patterns of human behavior that would be a product of or influenced by these themes.

I - Planet and Points

For some unknown reason - the Sun, the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto in our solar system have a mystical "correspondence" with the internal makeup of the human psyche. Along with these 10 planets, there are several other "points" on the birth chart that are also important.

The Big Three

Of all the many planets and/or points in the birth chart - there are three planets and/or points that are the most important to get a handle on. These three are the Moon, the Sun, and the Ascendant.

  • the Moon mirrors where we've already been (instincts)
  • the Sun mirrors where we're going in the future (heart and identity)
  • the Ascendant mirrors how we're going to get there (outer behaviors; how we show ourselves to others).

Ascendant, Moon, and Sun

The Ascendant -The Ascendant is also sometimes known as the "Rising Sign".  However, it is not a physical celestial body or planet. The Ascendant (or Rising Sign) is the Zodiac sign that was rising on the horizon at the exact moment of your birth. The Ascendant aids us in answering the question: "who am I in this world?" The Ascendant acts as an "I am filter" through which we process all of our life experiences.  It acts as a protector and a social mask.  The Ascendant reflects how we allow the world at large to "see" us.... it reflects our outward behaviors and personality that people first see when getting to know us.

On our own personal "hero's journey," the Ascendant takes on the very nature of "the quest." The outer behaviors of the Ascendant set the "stage" of our story. And the Ascendant is "the Guide" on our personal Quest! The fast moving point of the Ascendant cycles through all 12 of the Zodiac Signs within the course of a single day. And because the Ascendant is such a fast moving point on the chart - it's the main reason why astrologers need to know the exact time and place of your birth.  The Ascendant also determines the house placements in the birth chart. Some astrologers are big into the Ascendant determining physical characteristics.

The Moon

 - in the birth chart, the Moon reflects where we find our greatest source of emotional security and feel the safest. The Moon is the most important point during the "growing up" years.  Paradoxically, the Moon symbolizes both our "inner mother" and our "inner child." According to astrologer Liz Greene, the Moon contains our "bag of tricks," our inheritance, our instincts that we unconsciously fall back on to save ourselves in times of trouble or stress. Remember all those stories where the young hero starting out on a quest is given something to protect him/her by their mother?  The thing given is usually a magic ring, cloak, potion, etc.  The item Mom (Moon) gives the young hero is very often something that once belonged to the hero's father. It's a part of the hero's inheritance. And when the hero gets caught in a really tight spot - the hero then gets out this gift that miraculously "saves the hero's bacon...."

The Sun

 - in the birth chart - reflects our sense of identity, self-expression, source of creativity, and how we shine best. The Sun normally gains in importance and strength as we grow older and develop a clearer sense of who we are as an individual. Fact is, though....some folks never effectively express their Sun Sign energy (regardless of what the Daily Horoscope versions of astrology say). Some folks get stuck in only identifying with their Ascendant and/or Moon. The Sun is the focal point of our Hero's Journey! In order to feel totally alive...the Sun is the "inner hero," that over the course of a life-time, we must learn how to consciously give energy and expression to.

Summing Up:

  • The Ascendant is the Guide on our personal quest. (outer behaviors)
  • The Moon is the Inheritance (the bag of tricks containing a magic ring or potion) that saves the hero in times of grave danger. (instincts)
  • And the Sun is the Hero of our quest. (heart and identity)

Remember... the Moon is where we've been, the Sun is where we're going, and the Ascendant is how we get there.

The Rest Of The Planets Are Important Modifiers

Personal Planets

  • Mercury - communication, intelligence, thought, ideas

  • Venus - relating abilities, pleasure, enjoyment, values

  • Mars - assertiveness, getting what you want, survival

Social Planets

  • Jupiter - expansion, beneficent, jovial, opportunity, religious

  • Saturn - restriction, limitations, structure, learning hard lessons

Generational Planets

Generational planets are most important to individual personality as they form aspects to the other planets, the Ascendant, and the houses they fall in.

  • Uranus - independent, electricity, shock, inventive, detachment

  • Neptune - dependent, foggy, romantic, misty, mystical, magnetic, imagination

  • Pluto - intensity, hidden, invisible, transformation, eros, erotic

II - Zodiac Signs: the Elements and the Nodes

Moving on, we come to the Signs of the Zodiac (that most folks are at least semi-familiar with).  You most likely know the Zodiac Sign of your birth Sun - but where is the Ascendant and the planets?  Don't go into shock - but in your birth chart - each of the different planets (and points) mentioned above are most normally located in several of the different Zodiac signs. The Zodiac Sign of a particular planet in your birth chart will modify how the raw energy of the planet is expressed in your life.

At the very heart and soul of the twelve Zodiac signs are what are called the Elements and Nodes. Ignoring the Elements and Nodes is a huge mistake - because they are responsible for determining the basic qualities and characteristics of the twelve Zodiac signs. The twelve Zodiac signs are divided up into different cyclic combinations of the Elements and Nodes. The cycle of the Four Elements: (1st) Fire, (2nd) Earth, (3rd) Air (4th) Water The cycle of the Three Nodes: (1st) Cardinal, (2nd) Fixed (3rd) Mutable. Again... each of the twelve Zodiac signs is a different cyclic combination of these four basic Elements and three basic Nodes.

Element Cycle

Node Cycle

Did you happen to notice how fire, earth, air, and water kept repeating its cycle (three times)?  Did you notice how cardinal, fixed, and mutable kept repeating its cycle (four) times?  With a little brain strain and imagination - you can pretty much understand the basic qualities and characteristics of the 12 different Zodiac signs based solely on the cyclic Element and Node combination.

What is a "mutable fire sign”?

The Nodes and Elements are the very "heart and soul" of the 12 different Zodiac signs.

  • Modes: Cardinal, Fixed, and Mutable
  • Elements: Fire, Earth, Air, and Water
  Fire Earth Air Water
Cardinal Aries Capricorn Libra Cancer
Fixed Leo Taurus Aquarius Scorpio
Mutable Sagittarius Virgo Gemini Pisces

Mastering the concept of the Nodes and Elements can "potentially" be an invaluable resource for gaining a firmer grip on the general characteristics of the 12 Zodiac signs (without resorting to memorization).

Each node has its own reaction:

  • Cardinal (active) - adapts to external demands
  • Fixed (steadfast) - adapts to internal demands
  • Mutable (flexible) - adapts back and forth to both external and internal demands

Imagine there's someone standing in front of you. Now imagine that this person is holding a rock in their hand. Now imagine this person has just thrown that rock at you...A Cardinal (active) reaction would be to throw a rock back at the jerk. A Fixed (steadfast) reaction would be to stand there unaffected by the rock, and then taunt them with something like: “Hey, go ahead and hit me again”

And a Mutable (flexible) reaction would be to cleverly dodge the rock, and then "thumb your nose" at their lousy aim. Not every person with a mutable sign - if actually faced with this situation - would have this particular "mutable reaction."  That is because a mutable reaction is flexible and could go either way. Since there are 12 astrological signs - then:

  • 4 are Cardinal or active (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn)
  • 4 are Fixed or steadfast (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius)
  • 4 are Mutable or flexible (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces)

Zodiac Wheel

(Looking at a zodiac wheel, you'll notice the 4 members of each Node form a square in the circle. The individual members of these Node groups have an "uncomfortable" connection with each other.)

  • Fire - outgoing, action oriented, impulsive, and "fiery"
  • Earth - physical, practical, sensual, and material
  • Air - mental perceptions, thought, communication, and abstract ideas
  • Water - sensitive, feeling, empathic, and healing

Since there are 12 astrological signs - then:

  • 3 are Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) outgoing, action oriented, impulsive, and "fiery"
  • 3 are Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) physical, practical, sensual, and material
  • 3 are Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) mental perceptions, thought, communication, and abstract ideas
  • 3 are Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) sensitive, feeling, empathic, and healing
Elemental Zodiac Wheel

(Looking at a Zodiac wheel, you'll notice the three members of each Element form an equilateral triangle in the circle.

Individual members of these Element groups have a "comfortable" connection with each other.)

Again... Fire is outgoing, action oriented, impulsive, and (of course) "fiery." And since the above imagined "action scenario" of rock throwing (primarily) belonged to the element of "fire":

  • The Cardinal (active) + Fire reaction was a typical Aries reaction.
  • The Fixed (steadfast) + Fire reaction was a typical Leo reaction.
  • The Mutable (flexible) + Fire reaction was a typical Sagittarius reaction. (And again, not every Sagittarian would dodge the rock!)

Got it so far?

  • Aries = Cardinal (Active) + Fire = "Here's a bigger rock for you, jerk!"
  • Leo = Fixed (Steadfast) + Fire = "Hit me with your best shot, sucker! That didn't hurt!"
  • Sagittarius = Mutable (Flexible) + Fire = "Missed me, missed me, now you gotta kiss me!"

And by the way - we've ALL got Aries energy, when (and if) we really, really need to muster it up. It's just that some folks tend to act and react more typically "Aries" than other folks do.

Another Example

The element of water is sensitive, feeling, empathic, and healing. So try throwing a "feeling" at a water sign:

  • Cancer = Cardinal (Active) + Water = They'll throw another bigger, more powerful feeling back at you = Flowing Rivers.
  • Scorpio = Fixed (Steadfast) + Water = They'll take you deeper into your own feeling = Bottomless Lakes.
  • Pisces = Mutable (Flexible) + Water = They'll take over the feeling, adapt it, and make it a part of themselves = Vast Oceans.
  Fire Earth Air Water
Cardinal Aries Capricorn Libra Cancer
Fixed Leo Taurus Aquarius Scorpio
Mutable Sagittarius Virgo Gemini Pisces

III - Aspects

Aspects are special degrees of separation between the planets that act as dynamic connectors. Typical aspects are the:

  • conjunction
  • opposition
  • trine
  • square
  • sextile

When two of the planets share one of these special connections - the two planets actively exchange energy with one another. They dialogue with one another (like two characters in play or movie). They have conversations with one another. Perhaps (depending on the planets involved and the type of aspect) their energies will blend - and they'll be happy compatible companions.  Or, maybe, their individual energies will conflict - and they'll wind up in opposite corners and feuding. But whatever the case, the connections between the planets reflect the myths or plots (attitudes, beliefs and actions) that shape our lives and our journey.

Oversimplifications of Moon Connection Myths:

  • Moon/Saturn - "the hungry, deprived child"
  • Moon/Uranus - "the abandoned child"
  • Moon/Neptune - "the lost child"
  • Moon/Pluto - "the violated child"

Of course, no two people with a Moon/Saturn connection are going to play out the part (live out the myth) in exactly the same way.... however a typical underlying belief statement of someone with a Moon/Saturn connection might be something like: "I'll never receive the emotional nurturing I need to survive. I'll always be disappointed and go away hungry...."

A Movie Analogy

We've all been conditioned to think of a "myth" as being a make-believe story. Fact is - though - that the old Greek myths get played out all the time in our regular world of "time and space" reality.  I’m sure that we’ve all fantasized about being in a movie.  Imagine that you're a famous actor/actress, and your agent calls you up. You've just been offered the starring role in a brand new movie.  After finding out how much money you're going to be making - what's one of the first things you're going to want to know about the movie?  "What's the movie about?" Your agent tells you it's an action movie about the "rise to fame and glory of an extremely talented astrologer!"  You'd still like to take a look at the script.  Your agent hesitates for a second - and then explains that it's a rather "experimental, improvisational" piece. The actors in each scene are going to be given the "situations" and "possible outcomes" - and then the actors are expected to intuitively act out the "situations" without a written script or dialogue.  Remember, the dialogue is going to be improvisationally acted out. As the star of the movie - you've chosen a role to play. The natal (birth) chart is a lot like starring in this movie. The movie has a name, a main plot (and sub-plots), the main characters (and supporting roles), the dialogue between the actors, and the general situations with possible outcomes.  Consider the Planets in the chart to be the main characters (and supporting roles) in your movie. Consider the Aspects in a chart to be the dialogue between the different actors. Then, finally, consider the 12 Zodiac Signs and 12 houses to be the plots, themes, locations, and/or situations.

  • Planets - the characters
  • Aspects - the dialogue
  • Signs and Houses - the plots, themes, locations, and situations

Some dialogue (aspects) between the actors (planets) will end up being more important than other parts of the dialogue (aspects). The most important and memorable moments of dialogue are what will win the actor (planet) an Oscar. Other parts of the dialogue will be barely noticed by the critics.

IV - The Houses

Please note: If you don’t know the exact time of your birth (such as 11:38 pm), then you won’t be able to calculate your Ascendant (which in turn sets the stage for determining the 12 Houses).

The Houses are the places where stuff happens. And so the 12 Houses map out the “general areas of life” that you’re naturally the most attracted to and focused on during this lifetime. One way to think of the Houses is as the 12 different rooms of a mansion. There are certain places in your 12 room mansion that you'd naturally end up spending more time in than you would the others. Some folks might prefer spending most of their time in the living room, some in the dining room, some in the kitchen, and some would prefer hanging out in the den.

The Shortcut

There’s a shortcut to understanding the themes of the 12 different Houses.  The shortcut is that the themes of the 12 Houses are very similar to the energies of the 12 Zodiac signs. Of course, to benefit from this shortcut, the problem is that you first have to be familiar with those energies.  The themes of 1st house are similar to the energies of Aries. The themes of the 2nd house are similar to the energies of Taurus. And so on and so on….

Once you become familiar with the core energies of the 12 Zodiac signs, then the themes of the 12 Houses will make a whole lot more sense and begin falling into place. Like any other shortcut, it's not exactly perfect and is only suggestive.  If it confuses, then pay no attention to it.

1st house

2nd house

3rd house

4th house

5th house

6th house

7th house

8th house

9th house

10th house

11th house

12th house

Unfortunately, this shortcut for learning the themes of the 12 Houses, can also cause confusion for some people. The confusion sets in when trying to factor in another main concept about the Houses. This concept is: that each house of the 12 Houses is colored by the Zodiac Sign located on the cusp of the house.

How all this works

Take for example someone with “Gemini on the Ascendant” or "Gemini Rising." This means that the Zodiac Sign of Gemini is on the cusp of the person’s 1st house. (“cusp” is the exact beginning point of the house.)  Also when determining which signs belong in which house, it goes in order beginning with whichever sign is in the first house which is the Ascendant (the constellation of your birth).  E.g.:  We start with Gemini, so Cancer will be next, then Leo, and it goes around that way to each house until you come to Taurus (the sign before Gemini) which will be in the 12th house.

1st House

Remember the shortcut... and that the themes of the 1st house are very similar to Aries’ energy? Aries is the “I am” sign. Aries is the first rush of spring! The new birth! Energetic, bold, fiery, and impulsive. So the 1st house is the place where “I am” stuff happens. It’s the house of your outer, external, physical identity that you display to the world. But with Gemini on the Ascendant, the 1st house of outer identity is colored by the sign of Gemini. And Gemini says “I communicate.” Gemini says, "I’m curious, youthful, flighty, mentally active, and often mischievous." So the "I am" energies that you display to the world are that of Gemini.

2nd House:

Now let’s continue on to the 2nd house. The 2nd house themes are very similar to the energies of Taurus. Taurus is the “I possess” sign. Taurus is very concerned with matters of "meat and potatoes" practicality, "I only believe in (and thus) value those things that I can actually touch." Taurus says I love comfort, physical security, and possessions. So the 2nd house is related to personal values and physical security. It’s generally associated with your money and personal possessions.

Remember though... in our example you have Gemini on the Ascendant. So (most of the time) you’ll have Cancer on the cusp (the beginning) of the 2nd house. With Cancer on the cusp of the 2nd house, this Taurean-like house of money, security, and possessions is where you’ll be the most Cancerian-like. Your 2nd house of money and possessions is where you’ll experience the Zodiac sign of Cancer. Cancer is the “I feel” or “I nurture” sign. So you may choose to earn and/or spend your money in ways that makes you feel good about yourself and that nurtures the people in your life.

3rd House:

The 3rd house is the house naturally associated with Gemini.  As already mentioned above, Gemini is about communication, mental concepts, curiosity - as well as - short trips, siblings and the neighbors. Most often with Gemini on the Ascendant, the Zodiac sign of Leo will be on the cusp of the 3rd house of communication. Leo is the "I rule" or "I shine" sign. This means you’ll experience your personal creativity in the arena of communication and ideas. It also means you’re probably quite proud of your ideas, and much of your sense of self worth is tied up in your ideas and in your ability to communicate with all your neighbors. And so, chances are that you probably don’t deal well with criticism about your ideas. Well, that's enough of that. Hopefully, you've got the idea...

Common Questions

No birth planets in the House!

Get over it!  Rejoice in the knowledge that you have some empty houses! This just means that during this lifetime you won't be focusing as much energy in those Houses (areas of life) having no birth planets. You've still got the house, and you've still have a Zodiac sign on the cusp of the house. You just won't be focusing on those places (or areas) as much as you will in a house where you have planets. In reality, this may mean that those areas of life having an empty house will run much more smoothly and naturally for you. Planets that are located in a particular house serve as celestial teachers that most normally complicate that area of your life.

I've heard that some Houses are inherently more spiritual than others.

No.  Granted, the 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th houses are sometimes thought of as being spiritual or universal Houses. However, in my definition of the word "spiritual," spirituality means being the best you that you can be. Spirituality is being fully who you are. So in the astrological "road map of reality" - your birth chart house placements assist you in mapping out the places (or areas) where you can potentially learn how to be the best you that you can be during this lifetime. Let's face it. Not everyone is supposed to be another Gandhi. Not everyone is supposed to be another Martin Luther King Jr. Not everyone is supposed to be another Mother Teresa. We each have different, distinctive, and unique road maps.

*The 4th and 10th house meridian axis has historically experienced some serious "difficulties." The ancient Greeks associated the 4th house with both "parents." At some point in time astrologers replaced "parents" with the Father in the 4th house and shifted Mother to the 10th house. Many modern astrologers have now placed Mother into the 4th and Father into the 10th. If you noticed, I placed the different sex parent in the 4th house and the same sex parent in 10th house. To make matters even more confusing, I'm told that Vedic astrology places Mother in the 4th house and Father in the 9th house. When I get really cornered, I simply call the 4th and 10th house meridian axis the "parental axis."

The Castle Of The Psyche

Full credit for the following goes to Jungian author, Karen Hamaker-Zondag in her book "Foundations of Astrology." The concept, itself, is actually very ancient - but some have not made the necessary cognitive leap to connect it with the astrological birth chart.

Imagine in your mind's eye that you're now living in a far off, distant kingdom during medieval times. It's a remarkable, wondrous, and magical land of kings, queens, knights, nobles, jesters, dragons, castles, and such. You're on a long journey across the land... and coming to the top of hill - in the far off distance - you can just make out a magnificent castle.  Straining to see - you can see a large tower with its "standard" (flag) flying in the breeze. The "standard" is an emblem that reveals the "community standings" and "identity" of the castle owner to all those that are approaching from a great distance. The standard tells you in broad, general terms whether the owner of the castle is "friend or foe".

The Standard

The "standard" of this castle is similar to a point in a birth chart called the Mid-heaven.  Generally, the Mid-heaven is a point on your birth chart that reflects your public "reputation" and/or how you'd like to be known or seen by others. The Mid-heaven is the flag you proudly wave from the highest tower of your castle that tells other folks something about who you are while they're still approaching from a great distance. Very often it reflects your chosen career or perhaps, some other avocation or interest to which you ascribe import. The Mid-heaven closely resembles the Jungian term, "the persona." The persona is the outer, external mask that we each construct to protect the true "inner core" of our psyche from the everyday, bumps and bruises of the external world. The "danger" (in Jungian thought) of the persona is when we sometimes end up "identifying" with the mask that we've constructed for society's sake. We start believing the protective mask we've constructed is the "real us." We, then, ignore/repress many of our true needs, desires and wants. This refusal to give "life" (or expression) to our basic needs and desires - then results in a whole host of problems. But let's continue on to meet another facet of the "persona" called the Ascendant or Rising Sign...

Imagine again...

You decide to continue on the journey, with the intent of meeting and visiting with the landlord of the castle.  After making your way down the hill, you reach your destination. Now, the stately castle stands before you. Since you're a lot closer, now - you can check out the castle in greater detail: how large is the castle, what's it made of, how's the upkeep of the grounds (have they mowed the lawn, lately)? But before you can go in the castle - you still have to pass over the drawbridge and the portal. So, all this checking out of the exterior of the castle, the grounds and the drawbridge gives you your first impression of the castle.

Long before you ever knock on the door - you've already formed a mental picture regarding whether the castle is inviting, forbidding, well kept, or whatever.... "The exterior of the castle, the drawbridge, the portal, etc. are analogous to the Ascendant of the birth chart. Like the drawbridge, the Ascendant is that part of us that people first see when they're getting to know us. The Ascendant reflects a person's natural way of acting, his/her habitual external behavior, and his/her way of responding to new impulses and impressions. The Ascendant plays a very unique role within the horoscope. It reflects the psychic content that determines how we manifest ourselves externally. It is an important part of our character, sometimes so natural that when people call attention to our traits, we often have difficulty in recognizing these traits as being a part of us or being 'like us.'

Only when we have carefully observed ourselves over a period of time, will the Ascendant characteristics become clear to us." As mentioned earlier, many astrologers generally agree with the possible harmful effect of individuals who end up one-sidedly identifying with the energies of the Ascendant and/or the Mid-heaven. It results in the individual not allowing the expression and formation of the energies related to the Sun's placement. You don't let the true you shine through!  However, having said that, it shouldn't be a case of choosing one or the other (i.e. the Sun or the Ascendant).  It's important to give "voice" and expression to all the many differing (possibly conflicting) characters contained within the Castle of the Psyche. Each part of the horoscope plays its own vital role.

Outside vs. Inside

The image you had prior to entering the castle may, in fact, be very different than what's inside. From the outside, the "persona" of the Castle may have looked quite dark and ominous. But upon entering, you might discover it to be quite the opposite.

From the outside, the Castle might look quite well kept and orderly - the inside might be quite another matter altogether.

Inside the Castle

Once inside the Castle, we meet the King, the Queen, the King's Magician advisor, and the Court Jester (Fool). We also meet the King's beautiful young daughter (Page) and a spirited, brave Knight. Depending upon the particular kingdom in question, the King may (or may not) be asserting his true, royal right of being in charge of the castle. The inhabitants of the castle may be living in relative peace and harmony - or there may be chaos and unrest - or as with most castles, it's a little both.  Do you see how the Tarot corresponds with Astrology?  Tarot was loosely based upon astrology, but it is easier to understand and not as intense, so I teach it first.

In the birth chart

  • the king is reflected by the Sun
  • the queen is reflected by the Moon
  • the magician and the jester is reflected by Mercury
  • the king's daughter is reflected by Venus
  • the king's knight is reflected by Mars.

Are you ready to begin interpreting your chart?

The ancient Babylonians based zodiac signs on the constellation the sun was “in” on the day a person was born. During the ensuing millenniums, the moon's gravitational pull has made the Earth “wobble” around its axis, creating about a one-month bump in the stars' alignment.

The result?

“When astrologers say that the sun is in Pisces, it's really not in Pisces,” said Parke Kunkle, a board member of the Minnesota Planetarium Society.

Indeed, most horoscope readers who consider themselves Pisces are actually Aquarians. So instead of being sensitive, humane and idealistic, they actually are friendly, loyal and inventive. Or not.

“Historically, people looked at the sky to understand the world around us,” he said. “But today I don't think people who are into astrology look at the sky very much.”

But they do look at horoscopes. And now they have an explanation for why a day might not have turned out exactly as predicted.

Astrology buffs should be using these dates, reflecting where the stars currently are aligned:

—Capricorn: Jan. 20-Feb. 16;

—Aquarius: Feb. 16-March 11;

—Pisces: March 11-April 18;

—Aries: April 18-May 13;

—Taurus: May 13-June 21;

—Gemini: June 21-July 20;

—Cancer: July 20-Aug. 10;

—Leo: Aug. 10-Sept. 16;

—Virgo: Sept. 16-Oct. 30;

—Libra: Oct. 30-Nov. 23;

—Scorpio: Nov. 23-29;

—Ophiuchus*: Nov. 29-Dec. 17;

—Sagittarius: Dec. 17-Jan. 20.

*Discarded by the Babylonians because they wanted 12 signs per year. Ophiuchus is a man carrying a snake.

Astrologers have maintained the original Babylonian dates for the constellations.

The Constellations

Mar. 21 - April 19

Aries Constellation (View full size image; opens in a pop up window)Aries the Ram is an Autumn constellation, and can be best viewed in the night sky during the month of November.

Sun in Aries:

This personality has all the virtues and vices traditionally associated with 'masculinity'.  Adventurous, ambitious, impulsive, enthusiastic, energy.  Open to new ideas.  Loves freedom and welcomes challenges.  Motivated by inspiration and aspiration, spontaneous, ready for any encounter.  The Fire energy of Aries can be warm, vital, vivacious, cheerful and loyal to whatever happens to hold its interest. Fire energy craves freedom and opportunity and a steady stream of opportunity for new experiences.  Assertive, competitive, ambitious and full of confidence for the future. Aries learns best when actively engaging and grabbing hold of life. Fire loves adventure and hates routine! To be potent and active is a key self-concept for Aries. Of all the fire signs, Aries is the most outgoing and impulsive.  As leaders, they are strong; as followers, they are troublesome.  When undeveloped, liable to be impatient, violent, rough and rude.

Frank, direct, positive, intellectual in a practical way, objective, outgoing, fearless, bold.

Moon in Aries:

You have an emotional need for action and independence. You are the emotional "pioneer" and "motivator" of the Zodiac - and you may get easily bored when things seem to get too dull. When under stress you will seek a challenge and time to be on your own. As a very young child, you may have experienced your mother as being fiery, independent, and (possibly) a bit impatient and angry. Therefore, as an adult, you may feel emotionally safer when there's a lot of activity, movement, and action going on around you. During those inevitable "crisis moments," you tend to be an initiator and leader in your surroundings. In a crisis, doing anything is much preferable to sitting around and doing nothing. Like they say: "When the times get tough, the tough get going." Under stress, you may also have a temper with an extremely short fuse. However, these moments of intense anger are usually rather short-lived for you. Chances are you've moved on and "gotten over" whatever (or whoever) originally caused the slight - while the "guilty" party is still busy trying to figure out what happened.

Dominates the head and brain.  Aries tends to suffer from headaches, migraine, and depression.

Aries and Love:

With your Aries lover, what you see is what you get.  Bold Aries is ready to fight for his or her lover. Aries shows true devotion by working tirelessly for their lover, believing in their lover, and inspiring their lover. In life, Aries needs a crusade to fight for. Fortunately, Aries is usually more than willing to take along his or her lover as an "almost" full partner in the battle against the evil forces of the world; Aries does want to take the lead. Your Aries lover is likely going to be very competitive in all areas of his/her life. Try not to make the mistake of comforting your Aries, by giving him/her the sage advice: "It's only a game."  It's important to keep in mind that Aries men and/or Aries women don't do well with hidden subtleties and undercurrents. If you want your Aries lover to do something special for you, then don't drop gentle hints and expect him or her to "pick up on it." Spell out exactly what you're needing and/or wanting in plain, simple language. Your Aries lover will appreciate, respect, and love you for it - and you'll likely end up getting exactly what you're asking for.

Dominated by emotional life.  High sex drive.  Sexual egotism can be tempered by the romantic side to personality.

Love 'em and leave 'em. Since a big part of Aries loves the adventure and challenge of the chase - once Aries has actually caught you, Aries isn't always sure what to do with you. When it comes to the day to day, mundane hard work of maintaining a relationship - this is when Aries can dig in, truly shine, and prove themselves to be a shining warrior. Your Aries lover is also likely to have a quick temper.  Many women with the Sun in Aries experience great difficulty when it comes to consciously quot;owning" their Aries Sun and energy. Unfortunately, if you have unconsciously chosen to disown your Aries Sun - then your Aries Sun falls into what's called "shadow."  When your Sun falls into shadow, all the people around you will experience the "less fortunate" aspects of your Aries Sun.

Choleric, bad tempered, unoriginal, rigid, extremist, rash, impulsive, manipulating.

Red is Aries' color.  Red symbolizes fertility/virility, sexual passion, love, physical strength, willpower, courage, and magnetism.

Diamond is Aries' gem.  The diamond symbolizes peace, fidelity, innocence, and serenity.  Another stone for Aries is Coral.

Sweet pea is Aries woman's flower.  It symbolizes friendship, chastity, courage, and strength.  Carnation is the flower for Aries males.  It symbolizes protection, strength and healing.

Pavi Elle is Aries woman's fragrance.  Its richly complex blend of garden florals over feminine tones appeals to the straightforward Aries personality.  Other scents for the Aries woman are carnation and copal.  Scents best suited for Aries males are dragon's blood, musk, and pine.

Culinary Herbs:

Allspice, cinnamon, clove, cumin, fennel, and peppermint.

Location of Aries (View full size image; opens in a pop up window)Aries, the ram, is the first of the 12 Zodiacal Constellations, and marks the Vernal Equinox, or the beginning of Spring. This location, where the sun crosses the celestial equator, is called the First Point of Aries, and was determined in mythological times. Now, however, due to the precession or wobble of the Earth's orbit, this point has moved into western Pisces. As for all zodiacal constellations, it is possible to view this constellation in the sky only in the opposite season of the year, in this case Autumn.  In mid of November the above field culminates at about 22:30 LT (10:30 pm). The declination of these constellations ranges from +10 to +37 degrees. The brightest star in Aries is Hamal (V= 2.0 mag), visible just below the image center. The ecliptic crosses the southern field of Aries, i.e. it lies in the plane of the solar system. So you frequently can see the sun, moon, and planets there, like in our example Saturn in the lower left.

Old Aries Map (View full size image; opens in a pop up window)This constellation dates from Greek and Roman times, and depicts the Golden Ram that was sacrificed by Phrixus to bring fertility to his homeland in Thessaly. The Golden Fleece of the sacrificed ram was given to Jason and the Argonauts to return it home. Aries is devoid of prominent deep sky objects, and has only a few stars of interest, notably the triangle made up of the principal stars in the constellation. The ecliptic runs through Aries, so planets can often be seen in this area of the sky.

There are two stories about the heavenly Ram:

1.  Once Athamas was king of Bootia. He and his wife Nephele had a son called Phrixus and a daughter called Helle. When time went by Athamas left Nephele and married Ino. But Ino fell in love with Phrixus, yet he didn't want her. This rejection made her so angry that she tried to kill him and his sister. But Phrixus and Helle were safed by their mother, who sent a ram to tell them to fly and go to Kolchis (Hyginus, Fabulae).

This ram was Chrysomallus, the son of the sea god Neptun and Theophane. He accompanied brother and sister. But only Phrixus reached Kolchis; his sister drowned on their way (the part where she drowned was named after her: Hellepontos; Apollodorus, c.Cf. Tzetzes ad Lycophr. v.22). Once in Kolchis Chrysomallus told Phrixus to sacrifice him (Schol. Apollonius ad. L.I.256). He gave his golden coat as farewell present and after his death he immediately went up to the stars and placed himself between the stars. Because he has no longer his golden coat, he is not very conspicious (Hygninus, Poeticon Astronomicum, L.II.c.20 and Eratosthenes, Catasterismi.

2.  When Bacchus and his suite wandered through the lyberian desert, they were rescued from certain death by a ram, who showed them the way to a well. As a reward Bacchus set the ram under the stars and chose the place in a way, that whenever the sun wanderes through it everything on earth becomes green again and starts to flower (see: Hermippus and Hygenius; Poeticon Astronomicum lib.II.c.20).

April 20-May 20

Taurus Constellation (View full size image; opens in a pop up window)Taurus the Bull is an Autumn constellation, and can be best viewed in the night sky during the month of December.

Sun in Taurus:

The purest Taurean tends to be 'earthy' and slow but sure.  Sometimes awkward and clumsy, but also dignified.  Good looking, strong in body and personality.  A faithful and generous friend.  Gentle and even tempered.  Loves comforts and luxuries of every kind.  Will do anything to maintain security.  Always follows experience.  Can be stupidly hostile to change.  For the Sun placed in earth - life is a world of concrete reality and sensory perception, with roots solidly built on earthy, physical sensations. The Sun in earth feels most comfortable when surrounded with the world of the five senses.  Whatever cannot be touched, heard, smelled, seen or tasted is either denied or made as concrete and tangible as possible.

Taurean energy, ruled by the planet of Venus, has built itself a reputation for being possessive and valuing material things. But the apparent materialistic outlook of Taurus is not primarily based on high-minded and/or ideological beliefs. It’s just that Taureans feel safer when owning plenty of real, solid, possessions.  Of all the earth signs, Taurus has the greatest need for physical security. And the search for security can often tend to make Taurus conservative, possessive, and practical.

Taurus is also the Zodiacal sign with the greatest need for having a sense of inner self-worth and value. This need for inner-harmony means that Taurus needs to sense that he/she is being practical, productive, and fruitful.  Taurus is ultimately seeking a sense of inner-quiet, harmony, and serenity within him or herself. The earth sign Taurus is specifically associated with survival "through awareness of the senses."  Taurus reflects a childlike innocence and naiveté concerning the senses and the fulfillment of instinctual sexual needs. Barring other factors in the chart - of all the signs, you feel the strongest instinctual urge and need for touching and caressing. When it comes down to experiencing pure unbridled physical pleasure and sensuality, Taurus is often in a category all its own.

Solid, practical, straight, loyal, stable, affectionate, and modest.

Moon in Taurus:

With the Moon in Taurus, you dislike change in your surroundings. You may have seen your mother as being earthy, traditional, steady, and very reliable. So, as an adult, you now have an unconscious emotional need for stability and steady routines. The more familiar and unchanging your environment, the safer you'll feel. To help protect your sense of safety, you may attempt to rigidly hold on to and control your environment by keeping out any and all unnecessary change, disruption, and/or chaos. Because you feel the safest when surrounded by physical, tangible things that you can touch, see, smell, taste, and hear - you may seek out ways to physically "pamper" yourself when under stress. Physical closeness, touch, and affection are the best ways your "significant other" can express (and reassure) you of their love. Likewise, your lover withholding physical expressions of love and affection is an ironclad, guaranteed way to make you feel all alone and unloved.

Dominates the throat and neck area.  Taurus may suffer from asthma, throat infections, and unhealthy dietary habits.

Taurus and Love:

Your Taurus lover is solid, dependable, and sensual.  Ruled by Venus, the goddess of love, your Taurus lover revels in being surrounded with simple physical pleasures, simple physical comforts, and simple physical expressions of affection.

A straightforward lover, not given to experimentation.  Can be jealous to the point of possessiveness.

Taurus, be careful not to treat your lover as one of your precious trinkets and baubles. Nope! Your lover isn't one of your prized possessions or trophies that you put on a shelf and occasionally dust. If you treat your lover as one of your possessions, then (no matter how stubbornly you hold on) they'll slip through your fingers and be gone. Also, remember not to fall into the Taurus Venus Flytrap of only being concerned with greedily getting your own physical needs met. Give as much as you get.

Can be melancholic.  Slow to anger, but when provoked, very violent and furious.

Green is the Taurean's color.  Green symbolizes success, luck, prosperity, money, material comforts, ambition, fertility, and rejuvenation.

Emerald is Taurus' gem.  The emerald symbolizes hope, eloquence, popularity, and success.  Another stone for Taurus is Carnelian.

Lily of the Valley is Taurus woman's flower.  It symbolizes happiness and intelligence.  Patchouli is the flower for Taurus males.  It symbolizes money, fertility, and lust.

Foxfire is Taurus woman's fragrance.  Sandalwood, patchouli and oak moss are underscored with amber and floral notes for the perfect compliment to the elegantly sensuous Taurus.  Other scents for the Taurus woman are apple blossom, honeysuckle, lilac, magnolia, orchid, vanilla, and violet.  Scents best suited for Taurus males are patchouli, plumeria, daisy, oak moss, and tonka.

Culinary Herbs:

Cardamom, thyme and vanilla.  Rose and violet petals are also edible in limited quantities.

Location of Taurus (View full size image; opens in a pop up window)In mid-February the constellation Taurus can be seen best at 19 h local time, when it culminate. The position is above of last months Orion, or vice versa if you are on the southern hemisphere. Frequently you can see other bright objects in Taurus: the planets. The ecliptic crosses Taurus between the two Open Star Clusters Pleiades (M 45) and Hyades. The galactic plane is also very close. In the upper left part you can see parts of Auriga, lying exactly in the plane of our Milky Way.

The sun passes through this constellation from mid-May to late June; therefore it is best observed in the early wintertime. The red star alpha Tau, called Aldebaran, represents the glowing eye of the bull and white star beta Tau, called El Nath is thought to be the pushing horn. The open cluster of the Hyades forms the head.  The Bull lies between DECL=+30 and DECL=+10, RA=6h and RA=3h30m.

Old Taurus Map (View full size image; opens in a pop up window)The delightful daughter of Agenor, Europa, was so beautiful that Zeus immediately fell in love with her. Determined to win Europa's heart, Zeus assumed the form of a milky white bull, whose horns were crowned with flowers, and mingled with the herds of Agenor. Europa was enchanted with the sight of this splendid creature, and climbed upon its back. Taking advantage of his good fortune, Zeus carried the fair maiden away from her homeland, across the seas to the island of Crete. Here, Europa gave birth to Minos, father of the creature Minotaur, who was half bull and half man. Zeus celebrated his love for Europa by having the continent Europe named after her, and created the constellation Taurus, to be seen in the sky for eternity, the symbol of fertility and power.

May 21-June 21

Gemini Constellation (View full size image; opens in a pop up window)Gemini the Twins is a Winter constellation, and can be best viewed in the night sky during the month of January.

Sun in Gemini:

A certain duality is apparent in the pure Geminean.  Ambivalence, shifting outlook to the point of being elusive.  Disposition is very intelligent and humane, well-disposed and very judicious.  Complex and contradictory.

Gemini - ruled by the Roman messenger god, Mercury - is associated with communications. Hermes is the god of speech, and he is the god of silence. He is the eternal youth, puer aeternus; he is old man senex messenger to the dead. He is the talisman of the slick talking, road savvy, traveling salesman who is continually chasing down the virtues of the farmer's virginal daughters. He is the protector of merchants and tavern owners. He is the patron and benefactor of pickpockets, highway bandits, thieves, rogues, liars, hucksters, and scoundrels. He is jester, joker, fool, trickster, magician, genius, shaman, and psycho-pomp.

Mercury is lighter than air itself... Gemini’s quick-witted changeable energy may at times appear to others as being scattered, disorganized and chaotic. But there’s usually method to Gemini’s madness! (Although, truthfully, sometimes even Gemini’s constantly active right hand doesn’t know what his/her constantly moving left hand is up to.) And with the Sun in Gemini, you may also have a maddening tendency to "bend" the truth at times. Gemini energy also tends to be skeptical of "eternal truths."

The Gemini Sun is located in the element of air... Air signs are stimulated mentally and tend to have a detached perspective... Air is motivated and recharged by intellectual concepts, social interchanges, and the communication of ideas and/or ideals... The element of air (barring other factors) tends to produce a fairly active mind. The world is approached with reason and everything (everyone) is open to analysis.

Gemini is communicative, versatile, can be talkative, and is very curious. Gemini energy loves to know how things work and thrives on knowing what makes other people tick. And when curiosity gets the better of Gemini energy, Gemini may even say scandalous, shocking things or perform outrageous acts for no other purpose or reason than Gemini was "curious" and wanted to see what would happen.

Gemini revels in (and loves) working silently, invisibly behind the scenes. Gemini is certainly no slacker in the area of being secretive and keeping things under their hat.

Versatile, attractive, lively, happy, imaginative, affectionate, courteous, kind, generous, thoughtful, adaptable, ingenious, clever, logical.

Moon in Gemini:

With the Moon in Gemini, you have a strong need for mental stimulation and communication. You have an insatiable, irrepressible sense of curiosity, and you seek answers to many questions. Barring other factors in the birth chart, you have a strong tendency to be a "chatterbox." In fact, your friends would probably say you're one of those people who could carry on an interesting conversation with a telephone pole. As a very young child, you may have expected your mother to provide you with plenty of stimulation, communication, and mental activity. As an adult, you now feel the safest and most nurtured when actively communicating and sharing information with others.

Therefore, when involved in a close friendship or an intimate relationship with a lover - you feel the powerful, emotional need to share and fully communicate with the other person regarding any (and all) of the experiences of the day. Warning! One of the most hurtful things your partner or "significant other" can do is impatiently, patronizingly rush or hurry you along when you're involved in a conversation with a friend or even a casual acquaintance.

Blood and nervous system.  Also shoulders, lungs.  Nervous disorders.

Gemini and love:

Your Gemini lover wants to fall desperately in love with his/ her best friend. The primary motivating factor behind the energy of your Gemini lover is that of gathering discordant, seemingly unconnected information and then synthesizing all of it together into ideas that are new, unique, and interesting. That's just a fancy way of saying that in matters of love - barring other factors in the chart - your Gemini lover is going to be an interesting, thought provoking, humorous, friendly, and stimulating conversationalist. The old saying, "curiosity killed the cat" surely had your friendly and ever curious Gemini lover in mind. As such, your Gemini lover is going to be curious about "what makes you tick" - and he/she will ask you all about it.

Further, the old saying, "jack of all trades, master of none" surely had mentally active and flighty Gemini in mind. Your Gemini lover, ruled by the planet Mercury, is a born magician and mimic. Looking for a loudly roaring lion lover like Leo?  Gemini can do it. Hoping for nice dependable stable Taurus? Gemini can do it. Dreaming of an Aries warrior? Gemini can fit the bill. Keep in mind, though, that mimicry is never quite the same as the "real thing."

Gemini is associated with the element of air - and, as such, may not be completely in touch and comfortable with his or her body. So your Gemini lover is not normally going to be a "touchy," "feely," "snuggly" lover. Your Gemini lover may even turn on and turn off his/her sexuality like a light switch. And after the "deed" is done, your curious Gemini lover will very likely want to talk about the experience in detail.

Another thing to keep in mind is your playful, friendly, and curious Gemini lover probably has a light side and a dark side. One moment Gemini can be "skipping the light fantastic," the next moment "darkness abounds and there is no goodness in the world." After a while, coping with this Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde thing can get be taxing on the nerves.

Fickle, unromantic, superficial, flirtatious, never dull.  Liable to fall in and out of love.

Your Gemini lover has a tendency to be fickle when it comes to matters of the heart. Love 'em today, and tomorrow they bore you to tears. Love 'em the day after that, and the next day they're boring you again. Another tendency of some Gemini folks - due to having dualistic tendencies - some Gemini folks may give into and enjoy the stimulation of dating more than one person at a time. Finally, your continually curious Gemini lover may at times say and/or do shocking (perhaps cruel) things to you for no other reason than Gemini was curious about what your reaction would be.

Egocentric, restless, unconscientious, unscrupulous, dishonest, self-interested, pessimistic, sullen, irritable.

Pink is Gemini's color.  Pink symbolizes friendship, love, and femininity.

Alexandrite is Gemini's gem.  The alexandrite symbolizes the ability to adapt to change.  Another stone for Gemini is Agate.

Rose is Gemini woman's flower. It symbolizes love, luck, protection, and healing.  Clover is the Gemini male's flower.  It symbolizes money, love, fidelity, and success.

Odyssey is Gemini woman's fragrance.  Its blend of mimosa and magnolia shadowed with musk gives the Gemini woman a sparkling aura.  Other scents for the Gemini woman are lavender and lily.  Scents best suited for Gemini males are citrus or lavender.

Culinary Herbs:

Almond, anise, bergamot mint, dill, horehound, lavender, lemongrass, mace, parsley, and peppermint.

Location of Gemini (View full size image; opens in a pop up window)In mid of January the above field culminates at about 23:30 LT (11:30 pm). The declination of this constellation ranges from +10 to +35 degrees. The most prominent stars of Gemini are Castor and Pollux, the "heads" of the twins in the upper left of the image. Castor (right hand side) has a visual brightness of 1.6 mag and Pollux (left and below of Castor) a brightness of 1.2 mag.

Old Gemini Map (View full size image; opens in a pop up window)After Zeus, disguised as a graceful swan, visited Queen Leda of Sparta, she gave birth to twin sons, Castor and Pollux. The two were devoted and loving brothers who later became as different in nature as they appeared alike as twins. The mortal Castor developed into a master horseman, while the immortal Pollux became a famous boxer. Together, The Twins grew to become skillful warriors. When Castor was killed in battle, Pollux, who was so very attached to his brother, could not bear to continue on without him. Stricken with great sorrow, Pollux asked of their father, Zeus, to bring Castor back to life. Zeus, touched by this display of devoted brotherly love, arranged for The Twins to stay endlessly side by side among the stars as the brilliant constellation Gemini.

The names of the two brightest stars of this constellation, Castor and Pollux, can be found in the Greek mythology:  One day Zeus seduced Leda, the wife of the King of Sparta, Tyndareos. To get Leda Zeus changed himself to a swan. Leda became pregant and gave birth to the twins Pollux and Castor and to a girl named Helena. This was the same Helena who was robbed by Paris and brought to Trojan; this was the reason for the start of the Trojan war.

Cancer Constellation (View full size image; opens in a pop up window)Cancer the Crab is a Winter Constellation, and can be best viewed in the night sky during the month of February.

Sun in Cancer:

The nature of the pure Cancerian is akin to the nature of the crab: the hard outer shell conceals a soft and vulnerable interior.  A loyal and devoted friend or parent.  Can be badly wounded when experiencing disloyalty.  Home loving.  A time to be solitary, a time to be social.  Occult interest.  Sensitive, conservative.

Cancer is located in the astrological element of Water. Of the four astrological elements (Fire, Earth, Air, and Water) - Water is the most ancient, primitive, and instinctual. Being the most primal element, Water is also the element furthest away from rational, describable, consciousness and thought. Thus, Water energy tends to defy our meager attempts at coming up with rational explanations and descriptions. Astrologically, the element of water is associated with feeling, sensitivity, and emotion. All three Signs placed in the element of Water (Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces) are rather difficult to describe and/or measure out their true essence. However... Cancer, ruled by the mysterious Moon of the night, is perhaps the Water Sign furthest removed from "light of day" consciousness and description.

None of the ancient descriptions of Cancer mentioned the words "mother," "cooking," or "cleaning" a single time. Prior to being named, the constellation of Cancer, was known as "the Asses' Crib."

Nurturing, protective, tenacious, emotional sensitivity, and valuing strong traditional roots. Cancer is the archetypal image of the bond between mother and son (as well as the bond between father and daughter)... Ruled by the ever-changing, but ever faithful Moon - Cancer reflects the mysterious, continual cycles of nature... Cancer reflects the ebb and flow of the tides - and, as such, reflects the ebb and flow of emotions. This varying (ebb and flow) moods of "wild child" Cancerians are often a puzzlement to everyone around, including the Cancer Sun who's having the mood.

People with the Sun in watery (i.e. feeling) Cancer generally thrive and flourish best when developing an emotional relationship with their immediate surroundings. Hard cold logic doesn't have a chance when it comes to the energies of Cancer. This is because Cancer's strong preference is to evaluate everyone and everything in terms of feelings and values. You also tend to show your feelings more readily than do the other water signs (Scorpio and Pisces) and so may feel incredibly vulnerable because others seem to have easy access to your emotional life. This is part of why you may often resort to the infamous "Crab Sidestep" - in the attempt to hide your highly sensitive nature from others.

Because of this emotional sensitivity, the "Crab" is seldom genuinely comfortable when in a wider and more impersonal social setting, So you may tend to create a small, enclosed environment (called a home) and honor only a very few select people by allowing them into your sphere of influence. However, with those powerful Crab pinchers of yours, once you do allow someone or something into your sphere - you often experience great difficulty letting go. This stubborn refusal of emotionally letting go applies to people, traditions, and possessions. Remember that piece of kite string you acquired thirty years ago and squirreled away in the very back of a dresser drawer? Yep, better hang on to that piece of kite string. You never know when you might need it for something useful... That rainy day you've been planning for? It might end up being tomorrow. One never knows about these things, do they?

Energetic intuitive, wise, inspired, sympathetic, imaginative, romantic, inventive, original.

Moon in Cancer:

With the Moon in Cancer, you feel the safest when being emotionally nurtured and cared for or (on the other hand) when emotionally nurturing and taking care of others. As a young child, you most likely formed a strong bond with your mother. Because of this strong bond, you may have difficulty in breaking away from home later in life. You perceived Mom as being an emotionally nurturing, caring individual. You, however, now recognize that mother may have at times sought to control you with a strong dose of emotional guilt, and so you've discovered that this is often one of the instinctual ways you fall back on when attempting to control your environment (and thus make) your environment feel safer. Under stress, your first instinct is to merge and blend in with your environment. If surrounded by "saints," you'll be a saint. If surrounded by "sinners," you'll be a sinner. When things get to be too much, you'll most likely want to retire to the comfort and safety of your home. Water has a special way of rejuvenating and cleansing your Cancer Moon.

Cancer tends to suffer from stomach and digestion problems, and disorders effecting the reproductive organs.

Cancer and Love:

Born in the Zodiacal sign of the “Great Mother” and ruled by the Moon, your Cancer lover (whether male or female) is going to be mothering something or someone. It might be you; it might be your children; it might be an adorable little dog; it might be a social cause they believe in; it might be the neighbor’s kids down the street; or, it might be “all of the above.”

Cancer may attempt to hide it from you, but Cancer is the number 1 most sensitive and feeling member of the Zodiacal family. That's the reason for the notorious Crab shell. Cancer's hard, but very thin, shell is simply there for protection. Because of Cancer's extreme sensitivity, they tend to go at things in a sideways, indirect manner. After all, directly going for what one wants, leaves one open to the risk of rejection. (Cancer's biggest emotional fear). Cancer is sentimental about the past, so Cancer often likes to keep old photo albums nearby. These photo albums, more often than not, will include pictures of former lovers. If you’re the jealous type, then keep repeating to yourself: “I’m the one he/she’s with now.” For your Cancer lover, the past often feels more quot;real" than the unknown future. It's important to understand that your Cancer lover simply feels safer and more certain about moving into the unknown future, when knowing and remembering the past.

Often highly sexed.  Attached to home, loyal, unreserved.  Long term relationships.  Emotional moodiness, swinging between extremes.

Your Cancer lover has a memory like an elephant. Unfortunately, there are times when your Cancer lover’s wonderful memory is selective in nature. That means Cancer remembers every stupid, thoughtless, careless thing you’ve done or said in the past (remember - the past is more "real" to Cancer, than the future). Cancer may eventually forgive your mistakes of the past, but they never truly forget.

Very easily hurt, withdrawing, obstinate, apparently unemotional, sentimental, cold towards 'outsiders', lethargic.

White is Cancer's color.  White symbolizes peace, spiritual strength, truth, and lunar energy.

Pearl is Cancer's gem.  The pearl symbolizes the moon, femininity, purity, and creativity.  Another stone for Cancer is moonstone.

Moonflower is Cancer woman's flower.  It only blooms at night and symbolizes sleep and protection.  Morning Glory is the flower of Cancer males.  It symbolizes peace and happiness.

Amber Mist is cancer woman's fragrance.  The richness of amber with a touch of citrus will brighten Cancer's moodiest day.  Other scents for the Cancer woman are gardenia, jasmine, lilac, lotus, rose, and violet.  Scents best suited for Cancer males are ambergris, citrus, and sandalwood.

Culinary Herbs:

Eucalyptus and lemon.

Location of Cancer (View full size image; opens in a pop up window)In mid of April Cancer can be observed best in the evening at about 20 h local time between the constellations Leo and Gemini. The position is in the zodiac, i.e. in the plane of our solar system. So the sun, moon, and planets are frequently crossing this constellation. Cancers appearance is quite faint. The sun passes this constellation from late July to early August. In former times the Sun used to lie in this constellation when it reaches the its point farthest north - the time of the summer solstice. Nowadays the sun lies in the neighboring constellation Gemini on the time of the summer solstice (due to the effect of precession).

Old Cancer Map (View full size image; opens in a pop up window)As Hercules struggled to defeat the hideous nine-headed Hydra, Queen Hera, his immortal enemy, ordered Cancer, The Crab to go and harass The Hero. The Crab snapped at Hercules' ankles as he bravely fought with Hydra. Unbothered by Cancers' efforts, The Hero easily crushed the crab to pieces under the heel of his foot and went on to successfully destroy the monstrous snake. In gratitude for The Crab's courageous attempt to fulfill her angry wrath, Hera gifted Cancer with a place among the stars as a constellation. Located between Gemini and Leo, The Crab remains eternally perched just above Hydra, which is the longest constellation, eagerly awaiting an opportunity to seize the monster in its vise-like claws.

Leo Constellation (View full size image; opens in a pop up window)Leo the Lion is a Winter constellation, and can be best viewed in the night during the month of March.

Sun in Leo:

The pure Leo has a commanding personality and stands out from the crowd.  Personal magnetism, a leader always seeking a position of command.  An extrovert, outgoing, social and not afraid to bully others.  Finds it difficult to relinquish a dominant position.  Leo energy - motivated by inspiration and aspiration! Spontaneity! Ready for encounter! Fire on the mountain! Fire energy can be warm, vital, vivacious, cheerful and loyal to whatever happens to hold its interest. Fire energy craves freedom and opportunity and yep, a steady stream of opportunity for new experiences. The Fire energy of royal Leo can be assertive, competitive, ambitious and full of confidence for the future. Fire energy learns best when actively engaging in and grabbing hold of life. Fire loves adventure and hates routine!

I suppose you’ve heard the phrase, "Fake it, till you make it!" Well, Leo energy builds self-confidence, by putting on demonstrations and shows of bravado. By acting self-confident, Leo energy becomes self-confident in truth as well as deed. As fixed fire, Leo energy is much more self-reflective and inner-directed than the average person might suspect. Over the years you’ve learned that, first and foremost, you have to be able to live with and please yourself. You have the strong, burning inner-desire for self-authenticity. So, "to thine own self be true" could be another really good Leo motto. Ruled by the Sun, creative Leo energy is colored by an overall strong sense of drama and "bigness." Leo sees the "big picture" of possibilities for the future and for success. Playful, creative, warm-hearted, risk taking are all characteristics common to Leos who are living out the fullest potential of their birth sun placement. With the Sun in Leo, this fiery, bold, and energetic attitude may have been the way you perceived the image of your father (or another significant male figure) when you were young and still in the early stages of childhood.

Ambitious, courageous, strong-willed, positive, independent, self-confident, generous, courteous, uncomplicated, humane.

Moon in Leo:

With the Moon in Leo, you are emotionally generous and very warmhearted. You have a strong emotional need for praise and attention. As a very young child, you may been very proud of your mother, or you feel she was specially proud of you. You probably saw Mom as being a powerful, warm-hearted, special, and creative woman. Under stress you may show off in order to gain attention, or become arrogant. You have an instinctual need to feel special, unique, and recognized. Feeling proud of yourself is how you feel the safest, the most loved, and the most nurtured. You may also have a maddening tendency toward "one-upmanship".

Leo tends to suffer from heart, upper back, eye, blood, and lung problems.

Leo and Love:

Leo is the royal cat’s meow and the roaring King of the Jungle! Life is one big marvelous Shakespearean play for your romantic, warm hearted, and generous Leo lover - and all the world is Leo’s stage. Your Leo lover usually prides him or herself in being a magnificent and romantic lover - complete with sweeping gestures of emotional splendor. And here’s a big plus, barring other factors in the chart, your Leo lover is usually very good with children.

Self-authentication is the driving force behind your Leo lover. To understand this need for self-authentication, and it’s archetypal pattern, one need only look to the mythic “Search For The Holy Grail.” Even if you happen to hook up with one of those more shy, quiet, and introverted Leo lovers - you will invariably be able to see the natural born autocrat shining out from within, while magnanimously ruling his or her own inner kingdom.

Unlimited sexual lust, emotional indulgence, usually tempered by discipline.  Make loving, loyal partners.

Leo enjoys having someone they can dress up real nice, take to town, and show off. Leo enjoys a partner who will continually pump up and praise Leo’s larger than life ego. Leo has a thing about being flirtatious when it comes to attractive members of the opposite sex, but his (or her) royal highness won't tolerate the same behavior when coming from his or her partner. Apparently, Leo hasn't heard the old saying: "Turn about is fair play." Finally, know that it’s every young male Leo’s fantasy to be surrounded by his large pride of loyal lionesses. Some Leo males choose to live out this fantasy in a literal way. Many wisely choose not to.

Arrogant, autocratic, hasty, ill-tempered, suspicious, jealous, cunning, self-centered, boastful, bombastic, irritating.

Yellow is Leo's color.  Yellow symbolizes confidence, attraction, charm, and persuasion.

Ruby is Leo's gem.  The ruby symbolizes emotion, energy, and happiness in relationships.  Another stone for Leo is Amber.

Marigold is Leo woman's flower.  It symbolizes eloquence, persuasion, and charm.  Heliotrope is the flower for Leo males.  It symbolizes wealth, healing, and invisibility.

Vivage is Leo woman's fragrance.  Lilies, carnations, and lilac form a floral bouquet that perfectly suits Leo's glowing personality.  Other scents for the Leo woman are acacia and orange.  Scents best suited for Leo males are sandalwood, frankincense, copal, and musk.

Culinary Herbs:

Cinnamon, nutmeg, orange, and rosemary.

Location of Leo (View full size image; opens in a pop up window)In mid of march the above field culminates at about 23:00 LT (11 pm). The declination of Leo's boundaries ranges from -6 to +33 degrees. The most prominent star is Regulus, brightest star of Leo with a visual magnitude of 1.36 mag. Leo is intersected by the ecliptic, i.e. it lies in the projected plane of our planetary system. Therefore the planets, our moon and of course also our sun frequently appear in this region of the sky.

Old Leo Map (View full size image; opens in a pop up window)The first labor imposed on The Hero, Hercules, by mighty Zeus was to slay Leo, the frightful lion which roamed the forest of Nemaea. Hercules accomplished this task with the utmost of ease, simply strangling the fierce beast with his bare hands. From this point on, the courageous hero wore the lion's skin over his shoulders, assuring him eternal protection from harm. In memory of this dreadful battle, Zeus placed the proud and passionate lion in the heavens to eternally symbolize the challenges of kingship. The constellation of Leo contains the enormously bright star, Regulus, known as "the star of the king," perhaps referring to Alexander the Great, King of Macedonia, who, during his lifetime, ruled the entire known world, and who was born during the Lion month.

Virgo Constellation (View full size image; opens in a pop up window)Virgo the Virgin is a Spring constellation, and can be best viewed during the month of April.

Sun in Virgo:

The pure Virgo insists on common sense, practical intelligence and a perfectionist's cleanliness and order.  An outward lack of feeling might conceal too much inner emotion.

Virgo is constantly aiming toward the eternally elusive goal of being "perfect." At the same time, Virgo is painfully aware they're lacking in the area of perfection and constantly coming up short of their goal. Because of this unconscious need for perfection, Virgo has gained the reputation of being the Zodiacal "neat freak." And unfortunately because Virgo often extends their unconscious need for perfection to the people around them, Virgo has also earned the reputation of being overly critical in their interactions with loved ones. It's been said that Virgos have never found a house that they couldn't clean just a little bit better. However, as shocking as it might seem - many Virgos are total slobs when it comes to picking up around the house. True enough... some Virgos are typically into organization, discrimination, and neatness in their surrounding physical environment (thus the reputation). However, many other Virgos are into "mental" neatness and have the tidiest, most organized minds. Some Virgos are primarily into "physical" manifestations of neatness, while many other Virgos are primarily into "mental" organization, and some Virgos fall into the middle and are a little of both.

Practical Intelligence

With the Sun in Virgo, you are hardwired to be especially attuned to the element of Earth. The element of Earth is a world of concrete reality, sensory perception, and roots built on earthy, physical sensations. The Sun in earth feels most comfortable when surrounded with the world of the five senses. The Sun in Earth is a consciousness sold on physical security - sold on the here and the now. And the search for security can often tend to make one conservative and practical. Ruled by Mercury, Virgo energy often "shimmers" with intelligence. As with it’s flightier cousin, Gemini, (also ruled by Mercury) Virgo is a "mental" sign. However, Virgo’s Mercurian intelligence is directed toward practical matters and practical solutions. And Virgo desperately wants to be of practical service by fixing things, situations, or people. Virgo is the one Zodiac sign with the innate ability to literally turn a sow's ear into a silk purse. And, whether it's in Virgo's physical surroundings or in their neatly organized minds, Virgo energy enjoys focusing in on the very smallest of details.

Observant, patient, sensible, ingenious, studious, witty, well-spoken, discreet, charming, eye for detail, hard-working, conscientious and thorough, judicious.

Moon in Virgo:

With the Moon in Virgo, you will experience a strong link between the emotions and the body. You have a need for perfection (that you can never quite achieve). You may become ill when under stress. As a very young child, you may have experienced your mother as being a down-to-earth, individual who was rather critical and/or fussy. She was a perfectionist. You feel the safest when being useful and productive. If you can "figure out" and analyze your environment, then you'll generally feel a lot safer. As an emotional defense against stress, the more uncomfortable you feel with your environment - the more critical, fussy, and petty you tend to become.

Virgo tends to suffer from abdomen, intestine, spleen, and diaphragm problems.

Virgo and Love:

The motivating force behind Virgo is not "perfectionism." The primary motivating force behind Mercurial Virgo is that of "synthesizing." i.e. "How do I take all these different, unrelated bits and pieces and then synthesize them into something practical and useful? "It's important for Virgo's lover to know that Virgo feels the safest when being practical, useful, and productive. If Virgo can "figure out" and analyze his or her environment, then they generally feel a lot safer and happier. If Virgo is happy, everybody is happy.

If Virgo is unhappy, then no one is happy. The nicest things Virgo's partner can do to emotionally reassure Virgo are those little everyday practical expressions of affection which include sharing equally in the household chores and bringing Virgo a cup of chicken soup when he or she is sick. Virgo's lover withholding physical expressions of love and affection is an ironclad, guaranteed way to make Virgo feel all alone and unloved. In the privacy of their own home, Virgo energy may be anything other than what one might typically associate with being "virginal. "Virgo, with the Sun in the element of Earth, feels the safest and most comfortable when surrounded with the world of the five senses... sense of touch, sound, smell, sight, and taste. If you think about it for just a second, then that sounds downright hot, sexy, and lusty, doesn't it? In fact, since Virgos pride themselves in regard to their practical, technical abilities - Virgo's technical proficiency will likely come in very handy in the bedroom.

Keep tight control on own emotions.  With right partner: loyal and affectionate.  Technique rather than expression of desire.

As an emotional defense against stress, the more uncomfortable Virgo feels with their environment - the more critical, fussy, and petty Virgo tends to become.

Shrewd, fastidious, critically inclined, unsophisticated, indecisive, unstable, fickle-minded, frequently melancholic, worries.

Blue is Virgo's color.  Blue symbolizes honor, loyalty, tranquility, and wisdom.

Sapphire is Virgo's gem.  The sapphire symbolizes harmony, contentment, and cleansing.  Another stone for Virgo is sardonyx.

Aster is Virgo woman's flower.  It symbolizes love.  Honeysuckle is the flower for Virgo males.  It symbolizes luck, money, and protection.

Pearls and Lace is Virgo woman's fragrance.  The flowers of ylang- ylang, tuberose, and hyacinth form this floral blend which matches Virgo's sense of style.  Also Aquarius woman's fragrance.  Other scents for the Virgo woman are lily and lavender.  Scents best suited for Virgo males are patchouli and moss.

Culinary Herbs:

Almond, bergamot mint, dill, fennel, lavender, mace, and peppermint.

Location of Virgo (View full size image; opens in a pop up window)The constellation of Virgo is the center of the closest large cluster of galaxies, and can easily take up several evenings of observing time. While the galaxies in Ursa Major are 10-40 million light years away, the galaxies of Virgo are about twice as distant at about 70 million light years. As such, these galaxies show a lot less detail. But what they lack in quality, they make up in quantity. In some areas, it is difficult to move a whole telescopic field of view without seeing one or more galaxies. A good star atlas is a must in this region for identifying all the galaxies visible in a telescope of moderate aperture.  Virgo is the 6th sign of the zodiac; the sun passes through this constellation from late September to the end of October. It is the second largest constellation in the sky (the largest is Hydra).  The most outstanding Virgo Super cluster of galaxies is located on the northern border of Virgo reaching into the neighboring constellation of Coma Berenices.  The brightest galaxies can be located with small telescopes as faintly glowing patches of light. This super cluster is about 65 million light-years away. (Because its lying half in Coma Berenices it is often referred as Virgo-Coma Super cluster.)

Old Virgo Map (View full size image; opens in a pop up window)Virgo - "the Virgin" in Latin, whose Greek name was Parthenos. Confusion and chaos run wild in the naming of and mythology behind the constellation of Virgo.  Ancient sources do agree on associating Virgo with the maiden aspect of what's called the "tripartite Mother Goddess" (maiden, mother, crone).  According to Theony Condos (Star Myths), Virgo was associated with Dike, Demeter, Tyche (Fortuna), Thespia, Kore (aka Persephone), Eileithyaia (goddess of childbirth), Athena, and Hecate.  Granted, the most popular association is with the goddess, Dike (meaning justice). During the Golden Age of humanity, the gods lived among mortals. Slowly the morals of humanity deteriorated and the gods began leaving one by one. Dike (daughter of Zeus and Themis) was the final goddess to give up on humanity and leave earth.

Libra Constellation (View full size image; opens in a pop up window)Libra the Scales is a Spring constellation, and can be best viewed in the night sky during the month of May.

Sun in Libra:

The Libran is a person of balance and harmony.  Sensitive to the needs of others, even tempered, insatiably curious.  Easily influenced with a tendency for extremes if psychologically unbalanced.  Often a chronic inability to make decisions. The Sun in the element of air... stimulated mentally, detached perspective.... Motivated and recharged by intellectual concepts, social interchanges and the communication of ideas and/or ideals. The element of air (barring other factors) tends to produce a fairly active mind. With the Sun in Libra, the world is approached with reason, balance, and a sense of fairness. Everything (everyone) is open to analysis. Even-handed, harmonious, artistic, diplomatic, balancing, and strong sense of aesthetic beauty are characteristics typically associated with Libra. Ruled by the planet Venus and symbolized by the Scales of Justice, Libra is concerned with making choices, evaluations, weighing all the evidence, and maintaining balance. Libra can see all the many sides of an argument or issue. And in the interest of fair play, Libra really doesn’t like making a final decision until every last bit of the data and documentation has at last been sent in and accounted for. Unfortunately, Libra knows that there’s always one more bit of information which could be gathered, if only enough time is given.

Barring other factors in your chart, Libra is quite social and sensitive to what’s going on around them. Libra’s sense of inner-harmony is closely related to (and affected by) what’s going on around them. Disharmony, arguments, and disputes going on in Libra's immediate environment disturbs their sense of inner-harmony and equilibrium. So for Libra’s own sense of harmony, they often end up acting as peacemakers in their environment. Social interaction with other people is vital to Libran energy. Other people act as reflective mirrors through which Libran energy can learn more about their own ideas and thoughts. Libra generally discovers clarification regarding what they think about a particular matter or situation only after their first hearing what other people think and have to say on the matter.

With the Sun in Libra, you know only too well how important it is to weigh all the options - because you know that every choice made has a consequence.

Even-tempered, well-principled, affectionate, gentle, good critical faculty, impartial judgment, artistic, good perception, elegant, charming, good taste, sociable.

Moon in Libra:

With the Moon in Libra, You have a need for harmony and peaceful surroundings, and you will often seek out peace when under stress. You may have seen your mother as being social and harmonious. She was someone the other kids in the neighborhood liked to be around and they all thought of her as being a "cool Mom." When under stress you may seek to beautify your surroundings or get a "make-over."

Libra tends to suffer from lower back, kidney, and bladder problems.

Libra and Love:

Ruled by the planet Venus, Libra is known far and wide as the Zodiacal Lover. Libra typically enjoys and feels good being in an active love relationship with a partner. If you enjoy being romanced by a sweet, thoughtful, and pleasing partner - then you’ll think you’ve just about died and gone to heaven.

Libra is also known for being the Zodiacal diplomat, deal maker, and politician. Libra thrives on gathering all the information that’s currently available, weighing all the options, and then making a fair and just decision. Thus, Libra loves to bounce ideas off of the people around them. If you’re Libra’s lover – then this means you. For some odd reason, Libra is better able to see what Libra thinks when reflecting ideas off of you (and as many other people as possible). Just don’t make the tragic and fatal mistake of thinking Libra wants you to tell them what decision they should make and/or what to do. They don’t. Don’t think it was for naught that Libra was also traditionally associated with being the Zodiacal Sign of military generals.

Since Libra does thrive on gathering all the information that’s currently available – the problem often becomes that one more piece of new information can always be found. Holding out for information can indefinitely delay Libra’s ability to make that final fair and just decision. It’s in your best interest to know that you should not make the mistake of forcing Libra to rush into making their judgment. Continually pushing, chiding, and rushing your Libra lover into making a decision isn’t going to earn you any brownie points.

Gentle and romantic.  Natural charm arouses feeling of affection.  Balanced relationships.  Can be promiscuous.

Being the Zodiacal Lover, known for making decisions and choices, often times has one major drawback for their lovers. Folks with a strong emphasis in the judgment sign of Libra often get caught up in the archetypal pattern and/or behavior of the "Lover's Triangle." This means they often get caught up in real life scenarios where they must choose between "two loves." Sometimes, the choice between to "two loves" simply means that Libra must choose between two "things." (i.e. This job or that job).

However, sometimes the "two loves" consist of making a choice between one "thing" and one "person." (i.e. This job or that person.) Even worse, sometimes it's a choice between two "people." (i.e. This person and that person.) Add to this that Libra is also one of the Zodiacal signs in the element of Air. This means Libra is associated with objectivity and logical, rational, clear-headed thinking. As such, Libra can remain emotionally detached from any of the personal ramifications of the choices they make. Thus, some of the choices that Libra makes can be bone-chillingly cold and objective.

Libra weighs up all the evidence, and decides that you don’t quite make the cut. Your romantic, sweet, thoughtful, and pleasing partner can make the miraculous transformation into a hard, cold, block of ice faster than you can say "Rumplestiltskin."

Intolerant, impatient, greedy for approval, frivolous, shallow, changeable, indecisive.

Light Green is Libra's color.  Light green symbolizes new beginnings, re-growth, and abundance.

Peridot is Libra's gem.  The Peridot symbolizes friendship.  Another stone for Libra is yellow topaz.

Magnolia is Libra woman's flower.  It symbolizes fidelity.  Violet is the flower for Libra males.  It symbolizes protection, luck, love, lust, wishes, peace, and healing.

Timeless is Libra woman's fragrance.  This symphony of spices, florals, amber, moss, and woody scents is as complex as Libra herself.  Other scents for the Libra woman are apple blossom, lilac, orchid, plumeria, rose, sweet pea, vanilla, and violet.  Scents best suited for Libra males are vanilla, tuberose, and plumeria.

Culinary Herbs:

Marjoram, spearmint, thyme, and vanilla.

Location of Libra (View full size image; opens in a pop up window)Libra is somewhat of a "newcomer" as far as named constellations go. It is only considered a "stand-alone" constellation because of its location within the zodiac. Only the four brighter stars of Libra - alpha, beta, gamma and iota (a small square shape in the sky) - are considered to be the constellation of Libra. At one time the star group was part of Scorpius, forming its "claws" or front pinchers. It was the Egyptian priest-astronomers who first isolated the larger Scorpius into two separate constellations, although the reasoning for doing so is not clear. There is speculation as to the importance of this dull star group to these early people. It is theorized from later hieroglyphics of the great Pyramids that this pattern of obscure stars symbolized the equality of day and night, which is precisely what happened at the spring and autumn equinox as the sun entered this constellation some 2000 years ago. Presently, through precession of the Earth, the autumnal equinox has "migrated" from Libra westward into Virgo.

The name Zodiac is from the Latin "zone of animals," signifying the nature of the constellations. The only constellation of the Zodiac that is NOT an "animal" is Libra. That's because Libra has not always "been there". It was originally part of the 6th "sign" of the Zodiac: Scorpius. The Egyptian importance of making this a separated entity in the sky also explains why we envision a "scale" or "balance" of all things for this constellation. When we consider the importance of the fall equinox and the position of this constellation 2000 years ago as winter months approached, it quickly explains both the significance and labeling of this inconspicuous star pattern.

Old Libra Map (View full size image; opens in a pop up window)During the Golden Age, the legendary first period of human existence, Astraea, the Roman Goddess of justice, lived on the earth, mingling among the many mortal beings. In the pans of her great golden scales, she heavily weighed the good and evil deeds of men and women, thereby deciding their many different fates. As Astraea became increasingly offended by the wickedness of her citizens, she decided to flee from the corrupt civilization, and returned to the heavens, joining Demeter as the constellation of the Virgin Goddess. Astraea abandoned civilization so hurriedly that she left behind her golden scales of justice. The Romans, in fear of her judgment, created the constellation of Libra from the ancient Scorpion's claws so that The Scales would always be nearby in the sky.

Scorpio Constellation (View full size image; opens in a pop up window)Scorpio, the Scorpion, is a Spring constellation with an astronomical name of Scorpius, and can be best viewed in the night sky during the month of June.

Sun in Scorpio:

Traditionally, pure Scorpios are said to have characteristics of a violent and irrational nature.  Intense, magnetic attraction.  Dignified, reserved in conversation, easily hurt, quick to detect insult and easily moved by emotion. Typical descriptions of the Sun in Scorpio are that you are a passionate and intense individual. You may gain attention through creating dramatic situations. You may also be secretive. A few of the characteristics you should consciously seek to develop in your life are: Intensity, magnetism, your penetrating perception, and your power to confront (honestly with mercy).  You have the most powerful of the twelve Sun Signs, bar none.

Disciplined, tenacious, passionate, sensitive.  Constructive and loyal friend, intuitive and analytical.  Rational and honest.

Moon in Scorpio:

With the Moon in Scorpio, you like to keep a close watch over your environment. You tend to be quite wary and suspicious of the hidden workings and motivations of others. You may have been born at a time when your mother was experiencing a crisis in her life. Or your birth may have been somehow traumatic. As a very young child, you may have experienced your mother as being rather emotionally possessive, controlling, and intense in her relationship with you. As an adult, you have a strong need for emotional intensity, and you may often feel an overwhelming need for emotional drama in your life. With the Moon in Scorpio, feeling bad is often much better than feeling nothing at all. Under stress you might even resort to unconsciously acting and behaving in ways which will then create this needed emotional drama and intensity in your life.

Scorpio tends to suffer from groin, bladder, and urethra problems, and disorders effecting the reproductive organs.

Scorpio and Love:

Your Scorpio lover is capable of experiencing emotional depths of intense passion, yearning, and desire. As your lover, Scorpio is able to lead you into his/her innermost emotional depths. Taking in this inner-journey into the depths of Scorpio, then often enables you, as Scorpio's lover, to reach into and experience your own deepest passions, yearnings, and desires.

As Scorpio's lover, getting in touch with the dark depths of your own passions and desires may or may not be comfortable for you. If not comfortable with your own deepest passions and desires, then you may find yourself "headed for hills" just as fast as your little legs can carry you. As Scorpio's lover, chances are you've discovered the mysterious, magnetic drawing power that your Scorpio often seems to have on people. If your Scorpio lover wants something or someone bad enough - then Scorpio can often think the desired object into existence with the force of sheer will power.

Scorpio can choose to use this ability for good, unselfish purposes, or for their own, less than noble purposes. The bad news for your Scorpio lover is that Scorpio has likewise discovered (or should soon discover) that many of the things or people that he/she is able to "will into existence" usually ends up biting Scorpio on the butt.

Love's Spell: The most difficult lifelong lessons and/or problems that your Scorpio lover must eventually come to terms with are the "need for control" and "mental detachment." Barring other factors in the chart, Scorpio typically experiences great difficulty in being able to detach (unless they happen to be one doing the detaching). Scorpio has the strong natural tendency to emotionally hold on to a "ghost lover" in their dreams, fantasies, and obsessions - long after the real "flesh and blood lover" has ripped their heart to shreds and summarily left their universe.

Strong sex drive, passionate, physical.  Sensual and energetic.  Can be obsessive and jealous.

Scorpio's intense jealousy and often unfounded suspicions about their lover. Scorpio, we both know that this persistent, aching paranoia of yours can totally screw up an otherwise excellent relationship. Another shadow characteristic to watch out for with Scorpio is subtle manipulation. As also mentioned Scorpio has a need for control. Scorpio has discovered that sometimes the ability to will things into existence using sheer "will power" just isn't quite fast enough to suit them - and so Scorpio may feel the need to manipulate circumstances and/or people in order to get what they want. Not good. Not good at all.

Quick to anger, impatient, rigid, unloving, intolerant, secretive, abrupt, unforgiving, a tendency towards extremism, brooding, brutal, arrogant, volatile.

Scorpio's color is orange.  Orange symbolizes energy and the fire of creativity.

Opal is Scorpio's gem.  The opal symbolizes fire in all aspects of life: relationships, creativity, career, communication, etc.  Another stone for Scorpio is pink tourmaline.

Chrysanthemum is Scorpio woman's flower.  It symbolizes, fire, strength, and protection.  Gardenia is the flower for Scorpio males.  It symbolizes spirituality, peace, healing, and love.

Soft Musk is Scorpio woman's fragrance.  A distinctive blend of spicy and woody scents softened with musk, a hint of vanilla, and fruit plays up to the seductive femininity of the Scorpio woman.  Other scents for the Scorpio woman are gardenia, vanilla, and violet.  Scents best suited for Scorpio males are ambergris, musk, clove, and pine.

Culinary Herbs:

Allspice, basil, clove, cumin, ginger, and vanilla.

Location of Scorpio (View full size image; opens in a pop up window)Scorpius is a large and sprawling constellation which lies near the Milky Way, and thus holds many bright open and globular star clusters: a welcome change after hunting down the faint and distant galaxies of the Virgo-Coma galaxy cluster in the Spring. Both faint reflection nebulae and opaque dark nebulae also abound in this region, particularly in the region between Antares and Rho Ophiuci. This is due to the fact that we are looking in the direction close to the center of our galaxy. There are many gems in this area, and it is unfortunate for northern hemisphere observers that the observing season for this constellation is cut short both by the brief summer evenings, and by the constellation's southerly declination.  Lying about 1.5 degrees due west of Antares, this large globular cluster is both easily found, and a treat to observe. It is large, about 15' in diameter and is rather loosely concentrated, letting us resolve its individual stars rather easily. About 8-10 of its brightest members appear to form a bar right through its center, and gives the impression that the cluster is slightly elongated.

Old Scorpio Map (View full size image; opens in a pop up window)As the giant hunter, Orion, sets each spring in the west, his mortal enemy, The Scorpion, rises in the eastern sky. Scorpius gained eternal fame when, upon command of the gods, he spring from the earth to surprise Orion, and sent the able hunter to his final resting place. Even the God of Healing, Asclepius, was unable to reverse the effects of The Scorpion’s sharp sting. Scorpius is also remembered for his disastrous intervention when the mortal man, Phaeton, attempted to drive the chariot of Apollo, God of the Sun. Here, Scorpius but ed Apollo's horses with his lethal sting, causing the creatures to bolt and driving the sun-bearing chariot recklessly through the heavens, drying up many rivers and scorching the earth below.

Sagitarius Constellation (View full size image; opens in a pop up window)Sagittarius the Archer is a Summer constellation, and can be best viewed in the night sky during the month July.

Sun in Sagittarius:

Great potential often not realized.  A happy-go-lucky attitude to life and a carelessness to consequences of actions.  Enterprise, energy, versatility, exploring.  A strongly idealistic nature.  Need to feel free.  Open and generous attitude to life. Sagittarian energy - motivated by inspiration and aspiration! Spontaneity! Ready for encounter! Fire on the mountain! Fire energy can be warm, vital, vivacious, cheerful and loyal to whatever happens to hold its interest. Fire energy craves freedom and opportunity... a steady stream of opportunity for new experiences. Fire energy can be assertive, competitive, ambitious and full of confidence looking toward the future. Fire energy learns best when actively engaging and grabbing hold of life.

Fire, especially in Sagittarius, loves adventure - but conversely has difficulty when dealing with everyday mundane life and routine. Sagittarius presses on to the future in pursuit of high ideals! With the Sun in Sagittarius, creativity is especially linked with aspirations and ideals. Sagittarian energy is buoyant storytelling energy. Ruled by the jubilant planet, Jupiter (Roman god of thunderbolts and lightning, and ruler of all the other gods) Sagittarian energy enjoys preaching a good sermon from a pulpit (ordained or not).

Among natives fulfilling the energy of their Sun’s placement in Sagittarius: some of the key concepts are: broad-minded, optimistic, philosophical, need for change and variety, friendly, open spirited and exploratory. With the Sun in Sagittarius, this fiery, energetic attitude may have been the way you perceived the image of your own father (or another significant male figure) when you were very young and still in the earliest stages of childhood.

Honorable, trustworthy, honest, truthful, generous, sincere, just, active, bold, intrepid, loyal, independent, modest, religious, moral.

Moon in Sagittarius:

With the Moon in Sagittarius, you may have seen your mother as being fiery, fun-loving, adventurous, and independent. You have an emotional need for adventure and independence, and you may have an instinctual urge for travel and exploring. Under stress you will want to go on an "Indiana Jones" adventure and may feel the temptation to head out for "greener pastures." You feel rejuvenated when sharing experiences, adventures, and good times with your friends. You enjoy meeting new and interesting people.

Sagittarius tends to suffer from rheumatism and disorders effecting the hips, thighs, and sacral areas.

Sagittarius and Love:

The primary motivation ruling force for Sagittarius is the "need to understand." For Sagittarius, life is a grand, marvelous adventure to be experienced and lived to it's fullest. With Sagittarius, options and possibilities are endless - and Sagittarius is always headed for the distant broad horizon. In the throes of heartfelt love, Sagittarius will want his or her partner to share in this great adventure called life. One of the biggest mistakes a love partner can make is the attempt to cage Sagittarius in, either physically or emotionally. Sagittarius will often end up unconsciously choosing to marry a practical Hera type (male or female) in order to help Sagittarius keep "one foot on the ground." Unfortunately, Zeus marrying Hera is a double-edged sword and a "Catch 22." It sets up Sagittarius and his or her lover into compulsively playing out the archetypal myth of Zeus and Hera in their day to day lives.

The living out of the Zeus and Hera myth might be done in a literal and/or a figurative fashion. Fortunately, most Sagittarians don't feel the need to live out the myth of Zeus and Hera and/or "plant his or her seed" in a literal way.  Sagittarius always needs something to believe in and a distant goal to reach for (realistic or not). Unconsciously playing the archetypal role of jealous Hera, and dashing the hopes and dreams of Sagittarius, is not a wise thing for a lover to do. The more Hera plays his or her part by criticizing and restraining (and keeping one of Zeus' feet on the ground), the more discontented your Sagittarius lover will become and the more your Sagittarius lover will need freedom. That, in turn, will cause you (playing the part of Hera) to pull, criticize, and restrain even harder. Can you see the endless cycle you're caught up in?

Set great value on personal freedom.  Sincere and straightforward.  Lack jealousy and possessiveness.  Tend to be very promiscuous.

Being open to all possibilities means Sagittarius will often keep a back door escape route open, just in case of emergency. Commitment and obligations aren't normally a strong suit. Sagittarius should take care not to live out the myth of Zeus in a literal way. Nope, not good. Freely spreading your seed (or anything else) won't bring you (or your lover) happiness and/or contentment in this life. The grass only seems greener on the other side. While Zeus enjoyed his adventures (and planting his seeds), he always wanted to come back to the safety of home and hearth. Make sure you haven't burned all the bridges leading home by the spreading of your seed.

Quick to anger, impatient, rigid, unloving, intolerant, love ritual more than truth, outspoken, domineering, frivolous, emotionally unavailable or abusive, enjoy playing mind games.

Turquoise Blue is Sagittarius' color.  Turquoise blue symbolizes good health and an easy going personality.

Turquoise is Sagittarius' gem.  The turquoise symbolizes good health, innocence, and luck.  Another stone for Sagittarius is blue zircon.

Honeysuckle is Sagittarius woman's flower.  It symbolizes luck, psychic ability, and money.  Carnation is the flower for Sagittarius males.  Its powers are protection, strength and healing.

Fantasque is Sagittarius woman's fragrance.  A scent made up of osmanthus blossoms, vetiver, and wood tones captures the Sagittarius woman's spirited side.  Other scents for the Sagittarius woman are carnation, honeysuckle, and rose.  Scents best suited for Sagittarius males are copal, dragon's blood, and frankincense.

Culinary Herbs:

Anise, clove, ginger, nutmeg, orange, sassafras, and sage.

Location of Sagitarius (View full size image; opens in a pop up window)Sagittarius is a summer constellation. For Northern Hemisphere observers, it can be seen floating above the southern horizon during the summer months from June through August and into early September. However, by September, it is beginning to set by sunset.  Sagittarius is commonly called "the teapot" because the shape of the stars seems to look like a teapot to modern observers. However, the ancient Greeks and Romans, who named the constellation, thought it looked like a centaur shooting a bow and arrow into the heart of Scorpius, the scorpion. Sagittarius means Archer.  And an easy way to find Sagittarius would be to find the Milky Way overhead in summer. Follow it to the southern horizon, and you should find Sagittarius.  As with all constellations, Sagittarius is best seen in a dark sky outside the city. However, because its stars are relatively bright, you should be able to make out the basic shape even when the moon is up.

Old Sagitarius Map (View full size image; opens in a pop up window)While Cronus, father of Zeus, was courting the mortal woman Philyra, he assumed the form of a stallion to avoid the fury of his jealous wife, Rhea. From this union was born Chiron, the most famous of centaurs and a skillful archer. Although centaurs, creatures who are part man and part horse, were generally savage and cruel, Chiron was wise, gentle and good. As the teacher of several famous heroes, he educated the boys about the mysteries of life. One fated day, Chiron was mistakenly slain by his student, Hercules. Realizing the wound was incurable, Chiron begged Zeus not to deprive him of immortality. Pitying his half-brother's predicament, Zeus granted the request and located Chiron in the sky as the constellation Sagittarius, where The Archer stands with bow and arrow for all time.

Capricorn Constellation (View full size image; opens in a pop up window)Capricorn, the Sea Goat, is a Summer constellation with an astronomical name of Capricornus, and can be best viewed in the night sky during the month of August.

Sun in Capricorn:

Pure Capricorns are predictable, plodding along on a steady course.  Stable, serious, independent, rocklike, and cautiously confident.  They are strong-willed, subtle, collected, witty, hardworking.  They love authority and set high standards.  Prone to suppress emotions.  Hypochondria. Your Capricorn Sun is located in the element of earth - and earth is a world of concrete reality, sensory perception, and roots built on physical sensations. The Sun in earth feels most comfortable when surrounded with the world of the five senses. The bottom line is that Capricorns can be very sensual, sexy, and "tuned in" to their bodies! The Sun in earth is also a consciousness sold on physical security... sold on the here and the now...

So, of course, your search for physical security can end up giving one the reputation of being conservative and practical. Capricorn is best known for self-control, caution, and dependability. The sure-footed mountain goat energy of Capricorn makes its world more secure by building structures and form. The Capricorn goat works its way slowly, but surely to the top of the mountain. That may not sound too sexy or exciting to some folks, but I like the way you slowly, carefully work your way up the mountain.

Capricorn is ruled by the planet Saturn. Saturn's lighter face is the archetypal energy of the "Wise Old Man" (and/or "Wise Old Woman") The "Wise Old Man" earned his wisdom and insight the hard way. The "Wise Old Man" gains wisdom through all the varied experiences and trials encountered through the living of a long life. As the "Wise Old Man" (and/or "Wise Old Woman") of the Zodiac, Capricorn helps you define yourself through what's called the process of limitation. (or maybe better said - the process of elimination). It's a hard, cold fact of life that we often best define "who we are" by first determining "who we are not". What really makes Capricorn energy happy is being able to shape (i.e. organize) the world around them for their own sense of comfort and safety. Capricorn is usually willing to work long and hard to reach its goals. Capricorn energy is persistent and willing to wait for just the right opportunity.

Honest, self-critical, economical, fair, logical, rational, clear-headed, acute mind.

Moon in Capricorn:

With the Moon in Capricorn, you generally feel more emotionally secure when your day to day life is structured and/or when you are working hard. You may not feel valuable to others unless you're pulling more than your own weight? Because of all this, you may experience great difficulty in your ability to relax and "let go." You may also at times be emotionally distant or cold. All of this is primarily because, as a very young child, you may have experienced your mother as having been strict, authoritarian, and demanding perfect behavior. She may have also been emotionally cold and distant. Your mother's love may have been limited in some way, and she may have prone to depression. Or perhaps Mom was afraid that coddling you too much would spoil you? Was her favorite saying: "God helps those who help themselves." Or was it: "You've got to pull yourself up by your own bootstraps!"

As an adult, you tend to unconsciously nurture yourself in much the same way you subjectively experienced our mother's nurturing and caring for when you were very young. So, when under stress, you keep yourself emotionally safe and secure by drawing strict emotional boundaries and limitations between yourself and others. When feeling threatened by an unexpected crisis, you feel safer when taking over duty and responsibility and by quickly getting in control (and on top) of the situation.

Capricorn tends to suffer from skin diseases, bone fractures or breaks, and disorders effecting the knees, bones, and skin.

Capricorn and Love:

Capricorn is the Zodiacal pessimist! The Zodiacal Mountain goat Capricorn is hard working, almost always carrying more than his or her own share of the load (and letting you know it), and intent on climbing up to the very top of the heap. Practical, earthbound Capricorn thinks that you should be right up there with them, and Capricorn isn’t shy about telling you that. When the "crunch" comes, you can safely place your trust in good old reliable and faithful Capricorn. Love and life are very serious matters for the average Capricorn. With Capricorn in your corner, as your trusted partner and lover, you’ll be sure to make it through, "come hell or high water." Another major feather in Capricorn’s cap is that Capricorn is one of the three Zodiacal Earth Signs.

This means that Capricorn tends to be well-grounded in time and space reality, and this also means that Capricorn is normally quite tuned into and grounded in their physical senses and in their body. In plain language this means, Capricorn can often be a very giving, sensual, and pleasurable lover. Fortunately, there’s no such thing as a “pure” Capricorn type (or any other Zodiacal Sign, for that matter). Often, your Capricorn lover has a pinch of Sagittarius and/or a dash of Aquarius that helps lighten up all that dour Capricorn energy.

Demanding of respect, admiration.  Can make loyal and reliable partners.  Affectionate but not passionate.

Capricorn’s bleak and pessimistic attitude often leaves Capricorn prone to bouts of depression and melancholy. And while Leo is the sign best known for being an autocratic leader, Capricorn is often no slacker in the category of tyrannical dictators and taskmasters.

Slow, stubborn, unyielding, tough, lust for power, changeable, melancholic, hidden mercurial temperament, depressive.

Red is Capricorn's color.  Red symbolizes fertility/virility, sexual passion, love, physical strength, willpower, courage, and magnetism.

Garnet is Capricorn's gem.  The garnet symbolizes passion, balance, sensitivity, and sexual energy.  Another stone for Capricorn is Lapis Lazuli or any black stone.

Carnation is Capricorn woman's flower.  It symbolizes protection, strength, and healing.  Vervain is the flower for Capricorn males.  It symbolizes love, protection, purification, peace, money, youth, sleep, and healing.

Candid is the Capricorn woman's fragrance.  Jasmine, tuberose, ylang-ylang, sandalwood, oak moss, and vetiver enhance the natural charm of Capricorn.  Other scents for the Capricorn woman are honeysuckle, magnolia, and mimosa.  Scents best suited for Capricorn males are oak moss, patchouli, vervain, and vetivert.

Culinary Herbs:

Wintergreen, cardamom, nutmeg, allspice, and cinnamon.

Location of Capricorn (View full size image; opens in a pop up window)The four constellations of Aquila, Aquarius, Capricornus, and Delphinus lie relatively close to each other in a region of the sky which is almost devoid of bright showpiece deep sky objects. Aquarius and Capricornus lie away from the main body of the Milky Way, and mostly contain faint galaxies with only a few star clusters and nebulae. Aquila and Delphinus, on the other hand, lie right along the Milky Way and contain some fine examples of planetary and dark nebulae. The sun passes through Capricorn from late January to mid-February. In ancient times the sun was in this constellation at the winter solstice. Due to the precession of the Earth axis, the sun is now in the neighboring constellation Sagittarius at this time of the year. The latitude on Earth on which Capricorn appears overhead of an observer is still known as the Tropic of Capricorn.  The only object of note in this constellation, this globular cluster is about 8-10' in diameter, and is fairly well concentrated to the center.

Old Capricorn Map (View full size image; opens in a pop up window)Capricorn - Capricornus is a Latin compound of "she-goat" (capra) and "horn" (cornus), which translates the original Greek Aegocerus, "goat-horned." It is associated with being a Goat Horn, however it is also traditionally depicted as being a "sea goat" (a goat with a fish tail).  According to Theony Condos (Star Myths) the only ancient allusions to Capricorn are in relation to astronomical explanations (i.e. no regular Greek myths explaining why this constellation is in the sky.). Astronomical sources place this as being Aegocerus (goat - horned) who accompanied Zeus when battling the Titans on Mount Ada. Aegocerus allegedly invented the trumpet and then blew his trumpet in battle which caused panic among the Titans and so they fled.  There is a meager attempt in this version of the story to reconcile the "sea-goat" by saying that Aegocerus discovered the trumpet in the sea. The depiction of a sea-goat appears to be a hold over from an earlier Egyptian source.

According to Michael Macrone (By Jove) some later sources may have associated Capricorn with a goat that fed the infant Zeus as he was being secretly raised on Crete, the goat whose horn became the original "cornucopia" (horn of plenty).

January 20-February 18

Aquarius Constellation (View full size image; opens in a pop up window)Aquarius the Water Bearer is an Summer constellation, and can be best viewed in the night sky during the month of September.

Sun in Aquarius:

Often idealistic and unconventional.  Love liberty and personal freedom.  Strong convictions, they tend to hide their character.  Truth seeking, open-minded.  Do not make friends easily.  Very good disposition, kind and humane.  Feel unity with nature. The Sun in the element of air... stimulated mentally, detached perspective... Motivated and recharged by intellectual concepts, social interchanges and the communication of ideas and/or ideals... The element of air (barring other factors) tends to produce a fairly active mind. The world is approached with reason and everything (everyone) is open to analysis.

Aquarius generates a friendly, people-oriented mental energy. Unconventional, friendly, unpredictable and innovative are all characteristics of Aquarius. You thrive on originality and may be a bit rebellious. You may even be considered a wee bit eccentric. Aquarius values life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Aquarius values humanity and enjoys living in a world of detached intellect. Inventive Aquarian energy (at its best) is channeled through creative theoretical constructs which can be used for the purpose of bringing about the greater social good.

Unprejudiced, tolerant, frank, genial, refined, ethereal, idealistic, practical, quick, active, reasonable, moderate, concise, logical, imaginative, intuitive.

Moon in Aquarius:

With the Moon in Aquarius, you tend to feel secure with intellect rather than emotions. You may be aloof from your emotions and/or distrust your emotions as being way too irrational and unpredictable. You may have viewed your mother as being rather emotionally detached and unpredictable. You may have seen your mother as being electric, unique, and different. When under stress, you may feel the need for a quick change of your surroundings or you might feel the need to disrupt and stir things up a wee bit and get a little excitement going.

Aquarius tends to suffer from disorders effecting the legs and ankles.

Aquarius and Love:

Your Aquarius lover will be a wonderful and engaging friend. Aquarius can be (when he or she decides to kick up their heels) a wildly exciting, fun, and exhilarating partner when it comes to a special "wild night out on the town" or when doing something of an original, bizarre, and/or unexpected nature. It's best that Aquarius' lover understands upfront that Aquarius, barring other factors in the chart, tends not to be comfortable in close, intimate, and personal one to one settings and/or - for that matter - "relationships." Personal relationships and "intimacy" have a tendency to get "emotionally messy," and Aquarius enjoys keeping things light and easy. Aquarius may likely view any displays of emotion as being weakness in character. In particular, Aquarius is normally aghast at any public displays of sentimental emotion and/or feeling. Therefore,

Aquarius is not generally recommended as someone who you will want to seek out for emotional support and/or to have a good cry on the their shoulder. Your Aquarius lover is normally not going to be an affectionate partner. Aquarius is associated with the element of air - and, as such, Aquarius may not be completely in touch and comfortable with his or her body. Aquarius may even turn on and turn off his or her sexuality like a light switch. Your Aquarius lover is, in fact, the most comfortable with friendship love. Aquarius tends to generate a friendly, people-oriented mental energy. Unconventional, friendly, unpredictable and innovative are all characteristics of your Aquarius lover.

Happy to live alone, wary of permanent relationship.  Tenacious lovers, faithful providing personal freedom is not restricted.

Aquarius can become the prototype of the "mad scientist" who becomes so consumed with and bent on creating something new and original, that he or she refuses to look at the consequences involved. In the pursuit of his/her ideals, Aquarius may remain blind to the Pandora box of deadly plagues that's about to be opened. The further temptation of Aquarius is the tendency to become the archetypal "Iceman" of the Zodiac. Aquarian love can then become icy, cold, detached and isolated with the "Iceman" forever escaping into the safety of his/her own high ivory tower of intellect and lofty ideals. The detachment of your Aquarius lover then becomes a safe tower where no one can ever again touch (and hurt) the "Iceman".

Sometimes perceived as cold, unforgiving, fanatical eccentricity, excessive detachment.

Purple is Aquarius' color.  Purple symbolizes success, independence, and household protection.

Amethyst is Aquarius' gem.  The amethyst symbolizes power, peace, protection, and spirituality.  Another stone for Aquarius is Jacinth.

Violet is Aquarius woman's flower.  It symbolizes protection, luck, love, lust, wishes, peace, and healing.  Lavender is the flower for Aquarius males.  It symbolizes love, protection, sleep, longevity, purification, happiness, and peace.

Pearls and Lace is Aquarius woman's fragrance.  The flowers of ylang- ylang, tuberose, and hyacinth form this floral blend which matches Aquarius' sense of style.  Also Virgo woman's fragrance.  Other scents for the Aquarius woman are lavender, and mimosa.  Scents best suited for Aquarius males are patchouli and pine.

Culinary Herbs:

Almond, lavender, mace, and peppermint.

Aquila and Delphinus, on the other hand, lie right along the Milky Way and contain some fine examples of planetary and dark nebulae. The sun passes through this constellation from mid February to mid March. Aquarius stretches from the celestial equator to the southern hemisphere: RA=20h40m to RA=0h and DECL=3 degrees to DECL=-24 degrees respectively. A fine globular cluster, this object is about 10' in diameter and is relatively bright. It is sharply concentrated to the center, and is well resolved across its face.

Old Aquarius Map (View full size image; opens in a pop up window)Aquarius - called by the Greeks Hydrochoos, "the Water-Pourer." "Aquarius" is a Latin translation of the Greek name. According to the most ancient sources, Hydrochoos was considered to be Ganymede, the beloved cupbearer of Zeus (the chief Olympian god). Other later versions say that Aquarius was Deucalion, a Greek Noah, who was (with his wife) the only survivor of a great flood.  The antique sources differ in the interpretation of this constellation.  Eratosthenes of Cyrene (230 B.C.) stated in his Catasterismi (26) that Aquarius was Ganymedes when serving whine or nectar to Zeus.  Hygenus was of the opinion that Aquarius represented Deukalion and the water he pours stood for the Flood (poeticum astronomicum).  Finally some people take him for Cektrops. He lived in a time where whine was unknown. The pouring of the water is thought to be a symbol for the sacrifice of this element (instead of whine) for the gods (eubulus ap. eumd.l.c). The gods showed their gratitude giving him a place beneath the stars.

February 19-March 20

Pisces Constellation (View full size image; opens in a pop up window)Pisces the Fish is an Autumn constellation and can be best viewed in the night sky during the month of October.

Sun in Pisces:

The pure Piscean has a malleable nature, is sensitive to feelings and generally popular because of easy-going nature, affectionate and submissive nature.  Accepting of circumstances.  More emotional than rational.  Limited will-power and ambition, weak concentration, easily diverted.  Dislikes discipline.  Gives more than takes. Pisces, at it's best and most fruitful, is about meeting and responding to the natural rhythms of life with an open, imaginative, expectant, and adaptable attitude. The Zodiacal sign of Pisces is about being receptive to whatever comes your way, and then synthesizing it into the source of a totally new, unique, and imaginative creation. When "going with the flow" in answer to a crisis - you've discovered that all of the questions you needed answered are "miraculously" answered in the "nick of time." All the doors you needed opened are "unexpectedly" opened. Questions are answered and/or doors are are "miraculously" and "unexpectedly" opened with little or no "conscious" effort on your part.

Likewise, you've discovered that if you interfere by trying to take control matters when facing a crisis situation - then all the right answers mysteriously vanish and all the open doors slam shut on your toes. Typical descriptions of the Sun in Pisces are that you are an imaginative, sensitive, and serene individual. You feel the need to express and bring life to your fantasies, imagination and creativity. As a result, you may tend be a dreamer and a wee bit ungrounded in regard to the practicalities of everyday life. And according to traditional astrology readings, some of the basic characteristics you should seek to consciously develop in your life are: Your sense of compassion, your sensitivity, the ability for self-sacrifice, and your sense of intuition.

The magician-like shape shifting qualities of Pisces inevitably become your strongest bulwark and defense for survival in the world. This is especially going to be the case for males having the Sun in Pisces. The problem is, that the Zodiacal sign of Pisces asks us to give up the sense of needing absolute, complete control over our life course, journey, and destiny. Society doesn’t normally give positive strokes to those folks who exemplify and exhibit the gentle, caring, empathetic, imaginable, flowing, and sensitive energy of Pisces. This lack of social reinforcement holds especially true for males having the Sun in Pisces. As a Pisces, you often end up feeling like stranger in a strange land. With many slightly older, more experienced male Pisces (and some female Pisces), most of the world will never get a glimpse of the serene, sensitive, go with the flow, oceanic creature that lies just beneath the surface of whatever other Zodiacal sign the Pisces is hiding behind.

Sympathetic, gentle, patient, friendly, good-natured, sensitive, amiable.

Moon in Pisces:

With the Moon in Pisces, you feel and experience your own emotions deeply. You also tend to empathize rather deeply with and intuitively (sometimes almost psychically) "pick up on" the emotions of the people around you. As a very young child you may have pictured your mother as a caring, sensitive individual who experienced difficulty in setting her own emotional boundaries with other people. As an adult, you may feel a continuing strong empathy with your mother (or other alternative mother figure), and it would therefore be helpful to your own emotional growth and sense of emotional stability if you learn how to form your own emotional boundaries.

Pisces tends to suffer from disorders effecting the feet, toes, liver, and lymph system.

Pisces and Love:

I like to call Pisces the Zodiacal Sign of "Smoke and Mirrors." The Pisces lover seems disconnected and/or unconcerned with regular time and space reality.  He/she likes to change constantly preferring to change hair or clothing styles almost weekly.  Usually, the change in appearance was quite subtle - but other times you may not be sure it is the same person you were looking at the day before. Not recognizing someone that you’re dating is generally less than helpful. Let's say you happen to be walking down the street, and you pass by your Pisces without saying hello. For some odd reason… relying on the concept of "shape shifting," to explain to someone why you blatantly ignored them, doesn’t quite cut it. “Shape shifting” happens to be Pisces' best defense for their characteristic of not being very well connected to our regular time and space world.

Loving, shy, submissive, anxious to please partner.  Easily misled by lover.  Romantic, loyal.  Never egotistical.  Sexually delicate.

Pisces hides behind the strength of the other zodiac signs.

Unreliable, idle, careless, impractical, ineffective, peevish, intellectually dishonest.

Aqua is Pisces' color.  Aqua symbolizes cleansing and clarity.

Aquamarine is Pisces' gem.  The aquamarine symbolizes hope, good health, and luck.  Another stone for Pisces is Bloodstone.

Crocus is Pisces woman's flower.  It symbolizes love and visions.  Orris is the flower for Pisces males.  It symbolizes love, protection, and divination.

Ariane is the Pisces woman's fragrance.  Jasmine and other florals are combined with fruits and woods to create a fragrance as distinctive as Pisces herself.  Other scents for the Pisces woman are gardenia, honeysuckle, jasmine, mimosa, orris, and sweet pea.  Scents best suited for Pisces males are sandalwood and citrus.

Culinary Herbs:

Anise, clove, eucalyptus, lemon, nutmeg, sage, and sarsaparilla.

Location of Pisces (View full size image; opens in a pop up window)Pisces is the twelfth of the zodiacal constellations, and can be easily seen during early Autumn for Northern Hemisphere observers. Riding directly along the ecliptic, this constellation is now the location of the First Point of Aries, the point which the sun crosses the equator on its way north, thus marking the Vernal Equinox or the first day of Spring in the Northern Hemisphere. Due to precession, the First Point of Aries has moved west into Pisces since it was first established in Ancient Times.  In mid of October the above field culminates at about 23:00 LT (11 pm). The declination of this constellation ranges from -7 to +34 degrees. The ecliptic crosses the field of Pisces, i.e. Pisces lies in the plane of our solar system. So frequently the planets, the moon and of course also our sun can be observed there in the so called zodiac.

Old Pisces Map (View full size image; opens in a pop up window)Pisces, the Fishes, is a very old constellation, and is one of the original Zodiacal Constellations recognized in Ancient Times. In Greek and Roman mythology, this constellation represents the goddess Venus and her son Cupid, who transformed themselves into a pair of fish and jumped into the Nile River to escape from the monster Typhon. The images that concealed them were placed in the zodiac, where they are now known as Pisces, a lengthy double constellation occupying the region south of Andromeda and Pegasus and northwest of Cetus. Pisces acquired the title "Leaders of the Celestial Host" after precession brought the vernal equinox to a point south of the star Omega in the southwestern fish. In very ancient times, Pisces was known by the Babylonians as Nunu, or fish, and symbolized the Syrian goddess Derke as well as Atargatis, who was important to many ancient nations and depicted as a huge fish with a woman's head. Pisces was also significant to the early Christians, as it represented to them the "Miracle of the Loaves and Fishes" by which Jesus fed the multitudes.
